Subject: RE: Pride of Petrovair From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Feb 05 - 07:07 PM That DT version is some way off the original. More frequently the song is referred to as "Eileen Oge" (not "Orr"), and she's the Pride of Petravore. And it's "Big McGrath, the cattle jobber" not some fella called McGraw, who's a horse trader - and that's not just me saying it, it's how Percy French wrote it. Here's a link to Eileen Oge on Contemplator's site, with Percy French's words (but don't take too much notice of the Midi on that site, which is very strange indeed - most unusual for that site, I suppose it must be a variant rather than a mistake, but it's not one I've ever heard, and it's a pretty widely heard song.) |

Subject: RE: Pride of Petrovair From: Ferrara Date: 22 Feb 05 - 09:01 PM The only real difference I see is that I remember "Not a living one of us could look her in the eye." I thought I read once that Oge was Gaelic and was pronounced Ore? Definitely, I & S sang "Eileen Orr" or "Eileen Ore," not sure the spelling makes any difference. For years I thought it was "Eileenor," similar to "Eleanor," until I read that about "Oge." ??? |

Subject: RE: Pride of Petrovair From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 Feb 05 - 10:03 PM Should Houston Collisson be credited with the tune, or is it "traditional" as the DT claims? (or two different tunes) Seems to be a fair amount of mis-information out there. French was Irish, but the pdmusic site calls the song Welsh. The Percy French site won't open. I suppose "Savourneen Deelish, Eileen Oge!" was his inspiration- thread 12700, posted by Leslie N: Savourneen |

Subject: RE: Pride of Petrovair / Pride of Petrovar From: Noreen Date: 23 Feb 05 - 06:47 AM Oge is prounounced oag and means young, as in Donal Og (young Donal)(male/female versions). Welsh?! |

Subject: RE: Pride of Petrovair / Pride of Petrovar From: MartinRyan Date: 23 Feb 05 - 06:50 AM Ferrara "Oge" is, indeed, anglicised Gaelic from Óg (if the accent survives!), meaning young. Pronounced as a long O and a guttaral g. Never heard an R in it! Regards p.s. Collison wrote and/or arranged many tunes for French.I've never heard this one described as "traditional". |

Subject: RE: Pride of Petrovair / Pride of Petrovar From: Ferrara Date: 23 Feb 05 - 09:03 PM Thanks for the info. Maybe someone misheard it & folk processed it in this song at some point in time? Because the g is gutteral? In Egyptian arabic there's a "gh" sound that is pronounced almost exactly like "rh" or so it sounds to me (had a roommate whose last name was Ghaly & it sounded like Rally, more or less, to my ears.)
