Whilst at the Kingston in Hull I sang Sally Wheatley and was told of a parody about Dennis.

Does anyone have the words?

DENNIS WHEATLEY
(George Welch)

Oh I'm most depressed and sad
For wor lass has turned out bad
She used to dress herself in pinks and whites so sweetly
One neet I turned my back
And she dressed herself in black
And I'm sure that she's been reading Dennis Wheatley

Oh dear me, headless chickens for tea
The candles white for black they changed so quickly
There's a coffin in the shed
There's a room all painted red
Since wor lass she started reading Dennis Wheatley.

Went out one Friday night
Got home, why what a fright
There was 13 in the room all acting sheeply
Not a sign of Tupperware
Or Ann Summers Underwear
Just a great big pile of books by Dennis Wheatley.

Now I'm not one to shout
On a girls night they went out
I thought to Cullercoats or maybe Whitley
The police they thought it rude
Cos they catched them in the nude
Dancing round a photograph of Dennis Wheatley.

Now I've got to call a halt
Cos it's all Dennis's fault
I'll put a stop to this black magic gently
Cos I've bought myself a pond
And of that I've got quite fond
And I've bought a book called Jaws by Peter Benchly.

Oh dear me, the shark's had his tea
The one I bought from fishkeepers weekly
It's a 30 foot great white and it's taken to the wife
And I've cured wor lass of reading Dennis Wheatley.

Before singing this splendid song in public, don't forget to give credit to its author, the well-respected Tyneside guitarist and singer, George Welch.

Wassail!

Thank you Mike, I didn't spot that I'd missed the author and the title line...and I got the words from HergaKitty, so thanks to her too.

Mike of Northumbria...you beat me to it. George is indeed a very fine singer and guitarist and nearly caused me to lose my dinner with his stories while we were dining at Newcastleton this summer.

I first came across George in 'the cheap sunglass serenadiers' days when I first heard another one of his gems,'the nine stone toy boy'.

Hey Mike have you ever heard the tale of 'the wallsend butcher'

regards ritchie

Hi Ritchie!

Are you by any chance the same Ritchie who used to play drums in my son's rock band in Newcastle? (He was known as 'Dorz the Metalhead' in those days, but he's left all that behind him, and is well into jazz, folk, and world music now.)If you are - nice to hear from you again.

Anyhow, the answer to your question is, no, I haven't heard George's tale about the Wallsend Butcher yet, but will probably catch it at the Cumberland Arms one of these nights.

Wassail!

George is a superstar mate !! and my hero. Rarely seen outside Byker he does in fact appear at Whitby Moor & Coast each year. He has a number of good parodies including 'Stan of Jesmond Dene'

George is a legend.
Before lockdown he and Christine Jeans played every week at the Old Low Light and it's worth checking their FB page as they've played a few times more recently.
Their most recent CD "Warts and All" is also worth getting. Probably still available from Christine via her FB page.
The Cheap Sunglasses Serenaders version of 9 Stone Toy Boy can be found here:

OK you may have trouble believing this but I was one of the founding members of the Dennis Wheatley Book Convention, which is held yearly (until Covid) at the corus hotel, where Hammer filmed The Devil Rides Out. My Guilty Secret!!! I love Dennis Wheatley books. I also interviewed Nicki Arrigi for the BBC.
Love the parody.
