Subject: chords for sally wheatley From: Ritchie Date: 17 Mar 02 - 09:46 AM I love the song "Sally Wheatley" and always fancied playing it, well imagine my suprise when I was in a shop in Belford and they had the sheet music. Now I can't carry a chord in my head but I know whether or not I can get my fingers on the positions on the frets so burstin' with confidence I bought the book. however the tune that I knew was by Bob Fox & Stu Luckley but the tune in the book was different, probably the original. Can you please help me out I think it's the same tune that Geo Welch uses for his version titled "Dennis wheatley". See Gargolye I'm learning I also gave credit to George Welch. regards Ritchie |

Subject: RE: chords for sally wheatley From: Sorcha Date: 17 Mar 02 - 10:25 AM I don't know if it will help you any, but there is an abc and MIDI posted here in the forum. The chords are sort of "embedded" in the MIDI--you'll have to hunt for them. The chords are the letters in quote marks......i.e. "C". |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sally Wheatley From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 28 Oct 03 - 01:04 PM The DT credits the song to Alex Glasgow, and quotes what it calls "differing opinions regarding authorship". These are not opinions but facts; the song was written by Joe Wilson of Newcastle (c.1840-1874). Glasgow, perhaps not being able to trace the tune Wilson specified for it, put a new one to it, and that is the melody generally used now. Wilson wrote his song to a tune he called The Happy Land of Air-in. The Happy Land of Erin was a popular song of the day; broadside copies can be seen at the Bodleian. The meter is the same. It was in its turn based on an American song of the Civil War period, The Happy Land of Canaan, also well known in Britain through the broadside press and the Minstrel shows. There are broadside editions at the Bodleian and elsewhere, and sheet music of 1860 can be seen at the Levy Collection: The Happy Land of Canaan That is the tune which Joe Wilson intended for his song, and to which it was sung before Alex Glasgow set new music to it. |

Subject: RE: Sally Wheatley From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 30 Jul 04 - 08:41 PM No idea, I'm afraid. I don't play piano or guitar. I'll ask around; I know a few people who play the song once in a while. |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: Sally Wheatley From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Aug 04 - 08:11 PM And for standard tuning in the simplest key, I'm told that Verse: F/C/ F/C/ Am/C/ G G7// Dm/G7/ Dm/G7/ F/G/ C/// Chorus: C/Em/ Am/C/ Am/C/ G G7// Dm/G7/ Dm/G7/ F/G/ C/// should do the trick. |

Subject: RE: chords for sally wheatley From: John in Brisbane Date: 07 Aug 04 - 09:53 AM The ABC file has a few problems. The tune is almost OK(ish) but needs a bit of work. Once the tune is fixed it won't be too hard to cough up the chords. I'll try to contact BAZ in this regard. For those Aussies who have heard John McAuslen's (Director of the Brunswick Folk Music Festival in Melbourne) version, I hope you'll agree is particularly fine. It's great to see John back on the Festival circuit again. Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: Sally Wheatley From: Nick Date: 08 Aug 04 - 06:41 AM I saw Bob Fox do this last year in York and he plays it (I think) in DADGAD tuning - it certainly looked like it. There is an mp3 of the verse and chorus as performed by Bob Fox at his website at http://www.bobfoxmusic.com/ DADGAD chords are something like this - D - 000200 G* - 020000 D/A - 707000 Bm - x24400 A - x07677 G - 554000 D/F# - 404200 A* - x02200 A/C# - x42200 SALLY WHEATLEY(Joe Wilson) [D]Now I'm [G*]most depressed and [D]sad, [D]When I [G*]once was blithe and [D/A]glad, I could [D]trip around the [Bm]town both trim and [A]neatly. I was [D]happy [G*]night and [D]morn, But of [D]all such [G]joys I'm [D/A]shorn, Since I [G]fell so deep in [D/F#]love with [A*]Sally [D]Wheatley. Chorus; And [G]Oh [D/F#]dear [A*]me, what am [D]I [A/C#]ganna [Bm]de, Sally's [D]taken [A/C#]me [Bm]heart away com[A]pletely, And I'll [D]never [G*]get it [D]back , 'Cos she [D]gans with [G*]Mr [D/A]Black, And they [G]say he's gan te [D/F#]marry [A*]Sally Wheat[D]ley And his intro is something along the following lines - INTRO a la Bob Fox for Sally Wheatley D--0---2---4----7---------------------------------------------------- A-----------0---------7---5-----------2-P-0--------------------0--- G---------------------6-------6-----------------0----------------2--- D-----------5---------------------7-----------------4-------2-------- A---------------------0----------------------------------0----------- D----------------------------------------5--------------------------- D -------------0--------------------- [1] --sl>-7-- [2] --0-- A ---------------------------0----0-- --sl>-0-- --0-- G ----------0------------0-------2--- --sl>-6-- --2-- D ------4-----------0------------2--- --sl>-7-- --4-- A --2----------------------------0--- --------- --0-- D ---------------5------------------- --------- --0-- Twice at start ending in A [1] first time through and D [2] on second. Once at end of verse ending on A [1] Sure the format's all over the place but first attempt at tabbing something! |
