as a Charlie Poole fan, I beg to point out that HE recorded it; it hasn't been reissued on ano of the three County CDs but the original recording was Columbia 15385, according to Kinney Rorrer's book. I wonder if he had ever heard of Prof. Child?!
Rich, for your specific question, if you want a "pretty" version one of the Prickle Holly Bush variants (i first heard Bonnie Dobson's recording) would be nice; a more haunting (yes, that IS the word I want) would be the one that the Patons recorded, which may be close to what you want. The Poole may be a little too rough for your needs-- but you could use his words & tune and sing it yourself as described in your first post. good luck!
