My friend's brother served undercover in N.I for the British Army. He was born in England, having an English Colonel father and a mother from Derry. He knew his way around parts of N.I like the back of his hand, from years of childhood holidays with his mother. His father never joined them on the holidays back to see her folks. He also did an uncanny N.I accent, as only the child of a person from abroad can.
He did his "stint" and returned to England, being told he would never be asked to do it again, because of the pressure it had put him under.
He was however sent back, and ended up having a complete breakdown, and was eventually hauled out by the British Army, he was found hiding under a sink in a dingy flat, refusing to let go of his gun.
He was rewarded by the British Govt for his services, by being given a "grace and favour" apartment just off the Mall in London.Where he continued to breakdown, sworn to secrecy etc.
He became an alcoholic, still is. Was divorced by his wife due to his alarming mental state. Lost access to the kids. Can now be found sleeping rough in various parks in London. My friend hunts him out when she can, to give him money/food/support.He no longer speaks, at all, and shuns all help. Has totally removed himself from "normal society". Every winter she dreads the phonecall from the police to say he has been found dead.
Although he isn't actually "living" anymore, just breathing in and out.
