Subject: BS: Trigger Men/ Martin Dillon From: Den Date: 17 Jan 04 - 05:57 PM I was home recently and purchased this book. I admire Dillon's work. I find him as objective a reporter as you can be when reporting on N.I. as a former resident. Reading about the Shankill Butchers still send shivers up my spine. I remember going to "Kens Burgers" around about the time that catholics were abducted and consequently butchered in the surrounding area. Only fate and timing separated me from them. The other frightening piece in the book was about the role of the shadowy MRF detachment of the British Army who also murdered and incase I sound lesss than objective myself, he writes about the murders attributed to Dominic "Mad Dog" McGlinchey the INLA leader. I'd recommend the book to anyone who is interested in reading truthful accounts of the conflict in N. Ireland. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trigger Men/ Martin Dillon From: GUEST,Mc Date: 17 Jan 04 - 06:16 PM My friend's brother served undercover in N.I for the British Army. He was born in England, having an English Colonel father and a mother from Derry. He knew his way around parts of N.I like the back of his hand, from years of childhood holidays with his mother. His father never joined them on the holidays back to see her folks. He also did an uncanny N.I accent, as only the child of a person from abroad can. He did his "stint" and returned to England, being told he would never be asked to do it again, because of the pressure it had put him under. He was however sent back, and ended up having a complete breakdown, and was eventually hauled out by the British Army, he was found hiding under a sink in a dingy flat, refusing to let go of his gun. He was rewarded by the British Govt for his services, by being given a "grace and favour" apartment just off the Mall in London.Where he continued to breakdown, sworn to secrecy etc. He became an alcoholic, still is. Was divorced by his wife due to his alarming mental state. Lost access to the kids. Can now be found sleeping rough in various parks in London. My friend hunts him out when she can, to give him money/food/support.He no longer speaks, at all, and shuns all help. Has totally removed himself from "normal society". Every winter she dreads the phonecall from the police to say he has been found dead. Although he isn't actually "living" anymore, just breathing in and out. |
