George (Sapounidis) Sampson is a methodologist in the Business Survey Methods Division when he is not performing as a musician or magician. What makes him noteworthy is that he performs his songs in many languages, but especially in China's Mandarin dialect. Why would an ethnic Greek be attracted to the songs of a language that few Caucasians can speak? The answer is simple if you understand male musicians—it's the chicks. In early 1996, while studying at the University of Toronto for his PhD, George became romantically involved with a beautiful Chinese woman. He began learning the language and being a musician there was the inclination to serenade.

For the love of Chinese women
Love of Chinese women developed into a passion for Chinese culture and beginning in 1998 and continuing to the present, he has been a student of Chinese language (Mandarin). In early 1998, back at Statistics Canada, George learned two songs in Mandarin—one folk song and one pop song—and performed these at the Chinese New Year festival in Ottawa. The mainly Chinese audience was totally charmed by a non-Chinese performer singing their songs.

Invitations to perform, especially in Chinese, multiplied. One of the early invitations was for a reception at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China. Ambassador Mei Ping had this to say about George: "…the Chinese folk songs that he sings are especially exceptional and touching…I hope that he continually sings for the friendship between China, Canada and Greece."
