I'm three of the five (Greek, folkie and George) and still haven't got the foggiest idea... In Greece we say "it's all Chinese to me" - does that count as four?

Now if I CAN A DAmn clue for Canada find, I'll claim the prize.

There was a programme on British Chanel 4 TV last night about a Canadian Greek folk singer who went to China, sang Chinese folk songs, and tried to get involved in Olympic Games ceremonies involving Greece and China.

George (Sapounidis) Sampson is a methodologist in the Business Survey Methods Division when he is not performing as a musician or magician. What makes him noteworthy is that he performs his songs in many languages, but especially in China's Mandarin dialect. Why would an ethnic Greek be attracted to the songs of a language that few Caucasians can speak? The answer is simple if you understand male musicians—it's the chicks. In early 1996, while studying at the University of Toronto for his PhD, George became romantically involved with a beautiful Chinese woman. He began learning the language and being a musician there was the inclination to serenade.

For the love of Chinese women
Love of Chinese women developed into a passion for Chinese culture and beginning in 1998 and continuing to the present, he has been a student of Chinese language (Mandarin). In early 1998, back at Statistics Canada, George learned two songs in Mandarin—one folk song and one pop song—and performed these at the Chinese New Year festival in Ottawa. The mainly Chinese audience was totally charmed by a non-Chinese performer singing their songs.

Invitations to perform, especially in Chinese, multiplied. One of the early invitations was for a reception at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China. Ambassador Mei Ping had this to say about George: "…the Chinese folk songs that he sings are especially exceptional and touching…I hope that he continually sings for the friendship between China, Canada and Greece."

It was a fascinating programme. The only press review I've seen was a bit sniffy about his songs, all foreign songs translated literally seem a bit odd! They seemed to go down well in China to large and street audiences alike. He has to be praised for overcoming a stutter and OCD to get a demanding job, learn a difficult language and go for his dream. His father clearly had put him down all his life, dismissing him as a fantasist stuck in his teens. I guess anyone who dreams of a music career is guilty of that!
Ma and grandma thought a 40 year old should give up music and marry a nice Greek (and certainly NOT Chinese!) girl. OK, he didn't get to perform at the Olympics but he then settled for a more realisable role: he was a volunteer at the Olym,ics translating for the Chinese team (and playing and singing whenever he could). I loved his fellow volunteers singing (and Greek dancing!!!)on the 'bus taking them from the stadium to the Olympic village. If they make a film of him, Rowan Atkinson is a dead ringer!
