I love the sigh that David Hammond breathes into his recorded version of this song. I try to find a hint of it in my own efforts. To add to the talk of trades (sorry for the diversion): My own ancestors were careful to illustrate their rise in the Glasgow textile factory world by listing their exact rank. So Charles McGinn clearly identified himself as a Hacklermaker Journeyman (Bachelor) while his father, Michael, was denoted as a Flax Hackler. Likewise, his wife Mary listed herself as Flax Millikiner (Spinster) while her daugher (my grandmother) was listed (once reaching the Woonsocket, RI mills) as merely - "Mill Hand".
