Jed, there are lots of venues in New York City. Most do their bookings two or three months in advance. Unless you are a big name, they usually give you just a one-hour set and a share of the gate (cover) from people who say they are coming to hear you. Typically, these places have three to five acts an evening, each doing a single hour, which means you have to bring in your own audience. If someone comes and pays $5 or $10 to hear Joe Shmoe and then stays to hear you, Joe Shmoe gets the money and you don't.
