"How ya' folks all doing this evening? I know I'd rather be here than in the best hospital in town!" OK. So that's probably a pretty old one. But I've known some folks who had a quick wit on stage and could come up with a quick imprompty one-liner, delivered effortlessly. It usually "breaks the ice" with the crowd, and they settle back all the more to hear what's coming musically. It better be good! (I agree that canned jokes usually don't have the same effect.) "They say that about the time your face clears up, your mind starts going fuzzy..."
