Art, Jed wasn't calling your words character assasination. I think he was referring to Brendan Gill's words, and the anecdotes that surfaced in response to Brendan Gill's portrait of Campbell. I don't agree with Jed's characterization of this revision of Campbell's reputation as "character assasination". I think most of the people, including Gill, were giving their honest impressions of the man. One of the most revealing (in my opinion) statements came from Campbell's colleague, who intended his observation that "Joe tended to lump people together" as a statement in Cambell's defence. T.
