See thread help: '& the lion is the king of all'? (2004) for a transcription of the text in Sydney Gilpin, The Songs and Ballads of Cumberland (Linda's ultimate source for the words), as transcribed in Longfellow, Poems of Places, 1876; and a link to Gilpin's book at the Internet Archive, both provided by Masato, who mentioned it a few posts -and three years- ago. It answers all questions; there's no need to guess blindly as Mark has. Linda only modernized the text very slightly. I wonder why people so often feel the need to revive old discussions in order to provide wrong answers to questions that have already been answered correctly?
