My son John Null, an alumnus of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, has launched a new folk festival there in conjunction with their Alumni Weekend. It will feature Debby McClatchy, who is flying in from California for this, and Big Medicine-- wonderful old time string band from Raleigh with Joe Newberry, Bobb Head, Kenny Jackson, and LaNelle Davis. Of course I will be taking part too-- my son says I am the honored guest--hmmm, I must be getting to be one of those old timers they haul out on stage to talk about the old days. No way, not me! But I will sing my heart out. The festival will open with members of the Laurinburg Scottish Pipe Band. I am very excited that John is carrying this interest in trad music to the next generation. He is starting small: 1:00-4:00 in the afternoon, outside on the Patio of the Belk Center on campus. You can find it by following the signs. The local motels are full because of the weekend, but Laurinburg is near a lot of other wonderful places in the NC Sandhills.
