I don't know thw MacColl song Rapper Brown, but in north eastern english the mining term Rap means to either hit the roof or walls of the tunnel to test them for safty by listening to the resultant sound or to Rap on the rails after a roof fall to signal life beyond the fall or to Rap on the winding gear structure to request the cage to go up or down as the case may be. I am sure there are vids. about but I don't think I have time to find then before I pack my bags for the trip. I am sure some one will have then just a click away. Gan canny Brian
