A lot of history has been romanticized. Many people on the other side of the pond think that it was strictly a Scottish vs English affair, and the clearances were brought out all by the English. This is because 19th century books have romanticized it. Other examples include in the Scottish heavy-weight competitions, that the Scottish hammer was used as a weapon, when it was used as a farming tool. (Quoting a highland games competitor). And, tartans used to distinguish which clan you were from. Well, I'm pretty sure that the "clan tartan" concept is a romanticized concept, too.
