GUEST,Bob S. Pete Seeger's Banjo - Lost, then FOUND (17) Pete Seeger's Banjo 27 Oct 00

This just in.(For me anyway).

PETE SEEGER LOSES HIS BANJO--PART 1 OF 2 On August 8 of this year, folk legend Pete Seeger lost his banjo after a benefit concert in Rosendale, New York. At first, the police believed that the instrument had been stolen from Seeger's car after the show. Seeger offered a $1,000 reward for the return of the banjo, which he had played since the mid-1940s. The reward offer quickly spread by word of mouth through the folk community as well as on the Internet. A week after the banjo was reported missing, somebody put a fake banjo up for sale on an Internet auction site, claiming it was Seeger's. Two weeks after the banjo's disappearance, it turned up in the hands of Gary Schneeweiss, Jr., who had found it by the side of the road. Seeger's name and phone number were in the case, and Schneeweiss had tried to call, but Seeger's phone wasn't working. After the phone got fixed, the call went through and Seeger got his banjo back. It's believed that Seeger lost the banjo when he put it on the roof of his car, forgot it was there, and drove off.
