I'm glad those Tamlyn magazines have come in handy! I put them on the Folk North West site not too long ago after being given them by someone who would otherwise have thrown them out.
If you look at the early back issues of Folk North West on the same site Here there is a series of articles by Ian Woods about the Manchester Ship Canal.

I've got a number of very poor audio recordings of some of Ballad of the Northwest - I'll see if "The Big Ditch" is amongst them. I know "Narras and Flats" isn't there.
