My favourite comment has been from an American lady who spoke to BBC radio as she queued up along the side of the Thames this morning. She was understandably excited at the prospect of the pageantry, and chortled: "It's going to be just like the Fourth of July." Now, I'm not a great one on history, but isn't the Fourth of July precisely a celebration of getting rid of all this flummery?
