I heard this at a YHA tramping weekend in the 1960s - for some reason I still remember it:

Little girl reciting Shakespeare: I know a bank where the wild thyme grows ...
Teacher: To the woods!!

Now in 2012 I know that it comes from a long line of similar jokes. But where does "to the woods" come from? What was the original joke?
