I'm with Will Fly on this -- thinking of Ma(rye)a Marten and the Murder in the Red Barn (hope that's how it's all spelled). And I do remember feeling discombobulated when I first heard Frankie Laine pronounce it in the same way on his hit record "They call the wind..." -- didn't seem to fit with the mid-20th century!
