Very interesting. I didn't know what this word meant either, but then I was born in the Midlands and spent most of my life in the West Country before returning to the Midlands. What chance have I got? ;-) So,what brought me here? I too was trying to find out the meaning of this word having heard the Unthanks version of the testimony of Patience Kershaw. What a fantastic song! So evocative. Even though the song itself is relatively modern, because it is based on a historical source it has an authenticity that brings history to life.
