The constant lack of attribution really bugs me, and is one of the two reasons I'm trying to track down the originals (the other being that I'm fascinated by how songs change over time, especially when learned orally) That being said, I also want to keep the songs I love alive and being sung, so I have in the past (and will continue to do so) posted the lyrics before knowing the attribution. But it remains on my mind. I literally have been trying to find the origins of another camp song, On the Loose, for over a decade. I even bought a book with that as the title in hopes that it was connected, but the song wasn't mentioned. It's only this week, since stumbling across Mudcat, that I've been able to put that mystery to rest. (Cd's coming in the mail soon, I'm so excited!) I've noticed that Google has gotten better about connecting lyrics searches with accurate information about source, at least with pop songs. Hopefully down the road, attribution information will become so easily available that even social media uses it...
