Peter C: Did you find your answer? I've just come across it - I think! It's a Sacred Harp version by LP Breedlove in 1850 (that would fit with the reference to 19th C American). The score is available as a jpeg on the site www.sacredharpbremen.org, "lieder 152" (song 152).
