Steve Shaw/ Big Al: SS:The whole of the Cold War was predicated on the threat from Russia. There was never any threat from Russia after 1962 . BAW: i don't know about that. i heard that after the wall fell, they found plans for a invasion of England. As a geodetic surveyor with an interest in cartography, the very detailed Soviet maps of the UK that came to light a few years ago were a revelation. They were not only more detailed than standard OS maps (giving more information in and around military bases, ports and harbours etc....down to labelling the purpose of some buildings) but also carried the load-bearing capacities and exact dimensions of bridges and tunnels etc. Beautifully made. I have copies of a couple for Kent. They were made after 1962....late 70s or early 80s I'd say, from their content. I find it hard to believe they'd have gone to so much trouble if there were no plans at all, even if just contingency plans, for some sort of invasion/ occupation.
