Joe, the way you're using 'conspiracy theory' is exactly the way that McGrath is complaining about. The term 'conspiracy theory' should just refer to speculation that there is a certain conspiracy - for example, there is a 'theory' that trump has conspired with Russia: it is, therefore, a 'conspiracy theory'. However, as soon as it is called that, it can be dismissed as wild nonsense, on the same level as the notion that lizard-men are running the world ... (well, there is a similarity there, come to think of it) ........ Similarly, if you are skeptical of the 'lone nut' explanation of the Kennedy assassination, then you "believe in conspiracy theories" - and you are the nut. I agree that the term should be retired; it's too easily used to denigrate legitimate speculation/explanation as to who's doing what.
