Coleman Day, a good friend of mine and the owner/host of the Swordsman Coffeehouse in Halifax, Nova Scotia, used to perform The Highwayman as his signature song. I don't recall Cole's version as being like either the Ochs or the McKennitt performances, but I guess the words are the main thing, and any melody that fits will do.
