For many years, this song was a standard part of every Irish child's early education - at least in the Republic! It's simple structure and polka rhythm made it easy to adapt - so verses abound. I can't honestly claim to remember the ones Sister ---- (insert an appropriate nun's name!) taught me nearly seventy years ago! Regards p.s. A corner of my brain says that Maureen Potter, a famous Irish comedienne, popularised an English language (or macaronic?) version based an writing "Sheamaisin" as "Haymachine" - which is how it's pronounced.
