SEAMAISIN. Irish, Air or Polka. The song to the melody is called "An bhFaca tu mo Sheamaisin" (Have you seen my Jimmy), and tells of a parents love for their child who is on his way to school. It is sometimes rendered as a polka. Shanachie 79005, De Dannann - "The Mist Covered Mountain."

The album was called The Mist-Covered Mountain (1980). The song you want was sung by Seán Ó Conaire. I rather think that the lyric was printed on the insert; but if I had a copy of it, I don't seem to have it now.

(Note for people wanting to help: we are not talking about Banks of the Nile.)

Peace's first link brought me to lyrics and tune of "the Banks of the Nile"

An bhfaca tú mo Shéamaisín is the song of the week in futurelearn course from Dublin City University, Irish 105. The information says that this song "was written by Na Casaidigh". Na Casaidigh recorded the song but I don't believe they wrote it. I am looking for evidence to back up my case(or to convince me otherwise)!

Na Casaidigh recorded An bhfaca tú mo Shéamaisín> on "Óró Na Caisidigh: Songs of Our Childhood" in 1997. seventeen years after the release of Seán O Conaire's recording of "Séamaisín" on the Dé Danann album "The Mist Covered Mountain"

For many years, this song was a standard part of every Irish child's early education - at least in the Republic! It's simple structure and polka rhythm made it easy to adapt - so verses abound. I can't honestly claim to remember the ones Sister ---- (insert an appropriate nun's name!) taught me nearly seventy years ago!

A corner of my brain says that Maureen Potter, a famous Irish comedienne, popularised an English language (or macaronic?) version based an writing "Sheamaisin" as "Haymachine" - which is how it's pronounced.

Martin Ryan, Did you not hear the one about the farmer who lost his combine harvester and asked "An bhfaca tú ...". I learned it from Seamas Mac Annaidhm though, not from Maureen Potter.

I sang this in Spiddal Galway Gaeltacht in 1957/8 when I was 8 years old so it obviously was not written by na cassidys. Some of the words are different .
An bhfaca tu mo Sheamuisin
Mo mhuirnean og mo bhuachaillin
An bhfaca tu mo Sheamuisin
Ag dul ar sios an mbothar

They have ‘mo stoirin’ for ‘mo mhuirnean’
and ‘is e gabhail sios an bothar’

I wonder also if they have put an extra verse in.
I’d love to have the original song.
