I remember when the late Peter Gzowski interviewed Eric Bogle. He had just put out "Scraps of Paper," and Gzowski said probably no one else could sing it. Bogle said that a girl told him that after she heard it, she got reconciled with her own father. Bogle said "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" had won third prize in a songwriting contest. (To be fair, that was in its original, 12-or so-stanza version. But I wonder about the song that won!) And: when Bogle told Gzowski that he had trained as an accountant, you could hear Gzowski's jaw drop.
