Subject: Lyr Add: BALLAD OF HENRY HOLLOWAY (Eric Bogle) From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 21 Mar 05 - 03:04 AM Us old fogies . . . uh folkies gotta stick together. Here's one of 'em: THE BALLAD OF HENRY HOLLOWAY - Eric Bogle (D)Saturday night & the bar-room is howlin' with (A)young weekend cowboys all (D)struttin' & prowlin' (D)Drinkin' straight bourbon & tryin' not to shiver as it (A)burns down their throat & plays (D)hell with their liver On a (D)small stage in the bar's farthest (A)corner sits Henry Holloway playin' his (D)guitar (D)Under the spotlight, sweat on his face (G)glistenin', (D)singin' his heart out & (A)nobody's (D)listenin' (G)Fire in the belly, (D)fire in the soul; (A)ambition's a fire that's (D)hard to control. (G)Burnin' with bright dreams of (D)money & fame, (A)young Henry Holloway's (G)lost in the (D)flame. Evylin sits by the stage, she's the only one clappin' with eyes brightly shinin', feet in time tappin' Face full of love as she watches her man in his shirt of blue rhinestones she sewed on by hand Sweet red lips movin' as she sings along joinin' with Henry in his every song Although she's heard them about one million times Love is tone-deaf as well as stone blind Now the noise in the bar's like a volcano explodin' but up on the stage young Henry's is floatin' Eyes closed & driftin' through his favourite dream, he sings of places he's never seen Like Nashville & Memphis, New York & L.A. You can bet even money he'll get there some day But if he don't, he just might not care 'cause when he sings his songs, he's already there Saturday night's turned into Sunday mornin', the bar-room is empty, the bartender's yawnin' Home go the cowboys with their jeans & high boots; come Monday they'll put on their ties & dark suits Back to the motel go Henry & Evylin she falls asleep with her arms wrapped around him & dreams of motel rooms & cheap crowded bars Henry lies wide awake & dreams of the stars |
Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: SCRAPS OF PAPER (Eric Bogle) From: GUEST,Joe Date: 21 Mar 05 - 03:20 AM Can't remember where I found this but here you go. SCRAPS OF PAPER Words & music: Eric Bogle (G) These days my life seems (Am) somehow like a (D) tired old cliché - (G) A bad (Am) movie scene that (D) just goes on and on; (G) (G) With dialogue like (Am) "It's so sad how (D) fast time slips away" (G) (G) Or "How you (Am) never really (D) miss them 'til they're (G) gone". (Am) Funny how these (D) old clichés come (G) true - (Am) Never thought I'd (Am7) miss him - but I (D) do. Chorus: (G) My Father (Bm) died in (Am) sum (D) - mer -(G) and all he (Bm) left behind (D) (G) Were little (Bm) scraps of (Am) pa(D) - per - little (Bm) scraps of rhyme. (Am) I (Am) read them - and felt (D) something inside me break (G) And (Bm) angrily cried out "Too late - too (Am) late!" (G) Surely there (Bm) must be something (Am) better ... (Dm) (G) Surely there (Bm) must be something (Am) better ... (Dm) (G) (Bm) (Am) (D) (G) (inst) He and I were always strangers searchin' for someone. I was looking for a hero - and he a friend; So while I searched for my father, he was lookin' for his son And strangers we remained until the end - But the man who wrote his heart into those rhymes ... I know he could have been a good friend of mine. Chorus: My Father died in summer … So I sit here, where he lived and died, as the ghosts around me weave, As the evening shadows lengthen on the wall And in this bare and empty room, it's easy to believe That he never lived at all but the little scraps of paper in my hand Prove he lived to me; the father and the man . Chorus: My Father died in summer … |

Sorry if I hurt you, (F)darling, (G) But that´s the way the dice (C)fall, (Em) In a spin with the devil (Am)driving, (G) I'm just not coping well at (C)all. (hold) They tell me life begins at (F)forty, (G) Well, if that's true, I hope time (C)crawls, For on the downward slide from (F)thirty (G) I'm just not coping well at (C)all. Dreams all gone and lovers (F)leaving, (G) Battles lost beyond re(C)call, (Em) No heroes left I can be(Am)lieve in, (G) I'm just not coping well at (C)all. (F) Look at my life, it's turning a(C)way from me And I've not be(G)come the man that I once (C)hoped I'd be. (F) Look at my life, it's just an (C)empty sham, All that (G)trouble and pain just to be (C)what I am. (hold) The house is quiet since you (F)left me, (G) There's no love within its (C)walls, Only the lonesome sound of (F)empty (G) Into the silence (C)falls. Other men can lose their (F)lovers, (G) Bounce back like a rubber (C)ball, (Em) I'm just not like those (Am)others, (G) I'm just not coping well at (C)all. (F) Look at my life, it's turning a(C)way from me And I've not be(G)come the man that I once (C)hoped I'd be. Subject: Eric Bogle - Scraps of Paper From: GUEST,Elizabeth Block Date: 01 Feb 21 - 05:31 PM I remember when the late Peter Gzowski interviewed Eric Bogle. He had just put out "Scraps of Paper," and Gzowski said probably no one else could sing it. Bogle said that a girl told him that after she heard it, she got reconciled with her own father. Bogle said "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" had won third prize in a songwriting contest. (To be fair, that was in its original, 12-or so-stanza version. But I wonder about the song that won!) And: when Bogle told Gzowski that he had trained as an accountant, you could hear Gzowski's jaw drop. |
