(Crosby, Stills & Nash) Steve: The usual sources place Fred Clausen aboard the factory whaler Southern Empress. She was torpedoed by the Germans in '42. Just in general, were any of Clausen's songs collected as working chanties? Seems unlikely but, I have no clue what Lloyd's actual claim was. I'd think it much more likely they were done up as c.1940s forebitter/recreations and a 19th century genre label adapted, adopted, appropriated &c &c &c.
