It's a sad world in which good people of principle can so easily be swept aside by populist warmongers (Carter/Reagan, Foot/Thatcher) or by vacuous buffoons (Corbyn/Johnson). I seem to recall that Jimmy Carter was despised by many Americans when he was in power. Reagan was exactly the right man/ wrong man to see him off... But Jimmy Carter, for decades after, continued to live a life that marked him out as a shining beacon of humanity, so he still was able to give a lot to the world.
