Well this is quite a surprise to find. Been looking for the version that most closely resemblesthe song that my mom would sing to me when I was a child. My British mother was born in 1925 used to sing this to me in in the 60s and 70s and like some have observed it was incredibly thought-provoking to me as a child, I do remember thinking what sister would poison their brother and why did he want his dad to die. Folk songs you can't really explain them the original meanings are lost a time. ?? anyway after much looking finding this particular one was the closest to the one my mom sung with some small variations. Personally I think this version of verse is smoother but of course everyone's done like their own. Where have you been all day Henrie my son my boy, where have you been all day my beloved one. eating berries poison berries please make my bed I have a pain in my head and I want to lay down and die.
