Memorial Day in the USA was started as a day to remember Union soldiers from the Civil War. The south had their own Confederate equivalent which was earlier in the calendar year. When I lived in the south in the 70's Memorial Day was observed mostly by banks and branches of the Federal government. It was not an official state holiday so schools and factories etc. went about their business. Does anyone out there know if that has changed in the past 20 years? rich r
