Unfortunately, the myth of Pegleg is now found in some children's books, and kids grow up believing this and other so-called 'feel good' stories of escapes and the Underground Railroad. The real stories, and the people who lived them, remain buried in accounts preserved in American Memory and elsewhere.
Silber included fakelore as well as fact in his book, "Songs of the Civil War" (and the following recording).
Some of the songs were about the Civil War, but are of later
composition.
