Subject: Lyr/Chords/Tune Add: RECONCILIATION (Ron Kavana)
From: IvanB
Date: 26 Jun 00 - 04:12 PM

I sang this song in Hearme on the 25th and a few people asked for the lyrics and tune.

RECONCILIATION
Ron Kavana

D A7 D
When summer time has gone
D A7
and autumn winds are threatening
D A7
to blow our love away
G A7
'Tis then love will be tested.
D A7 D
Arm in arm we'll stand,
D G A7
Side by side together
G A7 G
To face the common foe
G A7
That would tear our love asunder.

Chorus:

D A7 D
Tura lura lay
D A7
Tura lura laddie
D A7 D
Tura lura lay
G A7 D
Tura lura laddie

Oh, ye fair-weather friends,
Where are you now I need you?
Gone like the autumn sun
On a dark December morning.
When hard times come around
Like cold and stormy weather,
There's only you and I, my love,
To shelter one another

Chorus:

Now there is a time to fight,
And there's a time for healing
As the sun it will melt the snow
On clear, bright April mornings.
Our fight has run its course
Now is the time for healing
So let us both embrace
Sweet reconciliation.

Chorus:

Where the hell did you get that spelling of Ron's surname??? Now I'm not sure I can get it right but it certainly starts with a K . .

The song is, of course, an alegory for Ireland. My favourite version of it is on Tomas Lynch's wonderful "Crux of the Catalogue" recording, on which Ron also appears.

Thanks, Shambles, I stand corrected. I actually heard this song in concert, so had only the performer's announcement of the name to go on. So, with provincialism fully turned on, I gave it the best 'American' spelling I could think of. Anyway, I appreciate the correction.

I heartily recommend the Ron Kavana CD Home Fire on the Green Linnet label. As the fineprint in the CD booklet points out "This is a totally acoustic recording, no electric instruments of any kind were used in its production." The song Reconciliation is included. John

The name is Ron Kavana, as John also said. There's a great cover version doen by John Wright band from which I got the words (the sweating over a hot tape method) which differ somewhat from those given by Ivan in the second and third verses, as follows:

You fairweather friends,
Where are you now, I need you,
Gone like the autumn wind
On cold December mornings,
When hard times come around,
Like cold and stormy weather
There's only you and I, my love,
To shelter one another.

Now there's a time to fly,
And there's a time for leaving
As the sun melts the snow
On warm, bright April mornings,
our fight has run it's course,
And now's the time for healing,
So let us both embrace
Sweet reconciliation.

The chorus ( if you want to be really pedantic) is Tooralooralie (as in lie down)
Tooralooraladdie
Tooralooralie
Tooralooralay (as in lay an egg!!)

And I know these chords! Ya-whooo!

Ron Kavana is the name he uses professionally his real name is Ron Kavanaugh... no C in either.
The subject of the song is Northern Ireland of course like many other songs. Its a beautiful song and I was going to learn it myself, but I was somewhat put off it as nothing in it rhymed... I found myself wanting to re-write the words to make them rhyme... so I gave up and found something else that didn't annoy me.
I agree with Trish above John Wright does a cracking version of this song.. as with all the songs he does.

Actually the Dick Gaughan Song Library has a set of lyrics here:

Since it's my understanding Dick got the song directly from Ron Kavana, I assume these lyrics are about as close to the original as possible without getting them from Ron.

Subject: Lyr Add: RECONCILIATION (Ron Kavana)
From: GUEST,Pamela Broderick
Date: 19 May 04 - 04:52 AM

'Reconciliation' is a plea for peace in Northern Ireland written by Ron Kavana (abbreviated from Kavanagh because so many people were both mispronouncing and misspelling it). It has been described as "the most widely covered new folk song of the 90s with over two hundred known recorded versions in six languages". The following lyrics were given to me by the man himself and so are hopefully definitive. (However, in his introduction to the song at a recent concert during the Cork Folk Festival, commenting on the many weird changes which so many of the cover versions had brought to the song, Ron pointed out that the word 'if' at the opening of the third verse is a recent addition which was suggested by the song's Gaelic translator and which Kavana felt was so appropriate that he now includes it himself and credits the translator - sorry, the name was in Gaelic and I couldn't make it out!):

When Summertime has gone and Autumn winds are threatening
   To blow our love away, 'tis then love will be tested;
   Arm-in-arm we'll stand, side-by-side together,
To face the common foe that would tear our love asunder.

   Chorus: Tura-lura-lay, tura-lura-laddie,
            Tura-lura-lay, too-oo-oo-oora-lay

Ye fairweather friends, where are you now I need you?
Gone, like the Autumn sun on dark December mornings.
When hard times come around like cold and stormy weather,
There's only you and I, My Love, to shelter one another.
            Tura-lura etc...

Now, if there is a time to fight and there's a time for healing,
As the sun it will melt the snow on clear bright April mornings,
Our fight has run its course, now is the time for healing,
So let us both embrace sweet reconciliation.
            Tura-lura etc...

P.S. The use of the seemingly meaningless 'Tura-lura' words in the chorus is because these soothing sounds/words are used frequently in Gaelic lullabies and Kavana says he wanted to keep the chorus as simple as possible to encourage people to join in with its singing.

P.P.S. the best biographical information I have been able to find on this fascinating songwriter/performer was in the issue of Folk Roots magazine which featured him on the front cover AND in the extensive booklet notes to his live 'Alien Alert' album. For all that, there is no substitute for seeing the man live where his 'performance' is , so often, an emotional and intellectual (not to mention musical) masterclass. Unfortunately, these days he seems to choose to tour very rarely and the live album mentioned above is the only new release we have had since 1998's Songs of Rebellion, Resistance and Reconciliation. However, from past evidence, this probably means that Mr. K, with his customary indifference to the demands of the music business, will soon unleash a whole glut of new material - I certainly hope so.

It's an inspiration for all sorts of reasons. A superlative version by Coope, Boyes and Simpson can be found on their 'Christmas Truce/Kerstbestand' album - it was recorded in a Belgian Church with the folk-choir Wak Maar Proper, and it's real 'hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck' stuff. Buy the album and give it a coat of listening-to!!

A great song but I think the chords given earlier are a bit over simplified. When I do this I also do it in D but playing C shapes and capo 2 up. I use Em and Bm the second time through each phrase:

A       D          A         D
When summer time is gone

G                               A
and autumn winds are threatnin'
    D            A      Bm
to blow our love away

Em                           A
'Tis then love will be tested

D       G          D
Arm in arm we'll stand
D       G         D G
side by side together
   D       G          Bm
to face a common foe

Em                        A
who would tear our love asunder

D      G      D
toor a loor a lay

G                A
Toor a loor a laddie

D       G    Bm
Toor a loor a lay

Em       G      D
Toor a loor a laddie

Incidentally it took me ages previewing and adjusting to make the spacing look right. Is there any way to do this in a regularly spaced font like courier?

If you want your text to look like this:
 D    A7   D
Tura lura lay
D         A7
Tura lura laddie
D    A7   D
Tura lura lay
G    A7   D
Tura lura laddie
You put "<pre>" (for "preformat") at the beginning of the section that you want to have fixed spacing, and "</pre>" at the end. Since these commands also cause a blank line to be inserted, you can avoid having too many blank lines (if that matters to you) by deleting the normal line breaks at these points, like this:
 Let's say this is your preceding paragraph of variable-spaced text.<pre> D    A7   D
Tura lura lay
D         A7
Tura lura laddie
D    A7   D
Tura lura lay
G    A7   D
Tura lura laddie</pre>And this is the following paragraph of variable-spaced text.
You also need to add one space after the <pre>.

Back in the early to mid-90s my missus, my kids and myself all thought that Ron/Ron and friends/Alias Ron were the best things since even before sliced bread. We saw 'em in action a few times, including at Exeter Phoenix, Sidmouth and Bristol, but the pinnacle was one night (I can even remember the date - 1st October 1993!) in the Tree Inn in Stratton, Bude. It was just Ron, Miriam and the box player Fran Byrne. The first set was your normal 45 minutes sort of thing - but the second half went on for about two and a half hours! The man's blood was well up! There are people in Bude who will still eulogise about that night if you mention it.
