Well, this could be or not.... Somewhere I have an old Burl Ives song that goes:

"I'm troubled, yes I'm troubled, I'm troubled in my mind if that trouble don't kill me I'll live a long time. My cheeks once were red, like the red, red rose, but now they are white as the lily that grows..."

If you think this is it, I'll do my best to dig it out or up and send all the lyrics...

It was recorded on the folkways Watson Family record which you should definitely get a hold of - the harmony singing is inspiring. I'll supply you with the words later when I have some more time - or you can get it from Rick Fielding who also sings this one.

You may have had trouble finding it because It's more of an Old Time tune than a standard bluegrass song. Its on a Gerry Garcia, et.al "Old and in the Way" tape I have. I also found it in the Folk Songs of North America by Alan Lomax (song #102) See below.

I'm troubled, I'm troubled
I'm troubled in my mind,
If trouble don't kill me,
I'll live a long time,

My cheeks was as red,
As the red, red rose,
But now they're as pale as
The lily that blows.

I'll build me a cabin
On the mountain so high,
Where the wild birds can't see me
Or hear my sad cry.

I'm sad and I'm lonely,
My heart it will break,
My true love loves another,
Lord, I wisht I was dead.
Line Breaks
fixed.

Yup, I sing it. Thanks Arnie. Just use the words to "On Top of Old Smokey" and go to town.

From: Tiger

This is from The Watson Family album mentioned above. The liner notes read like typical Lomax, so I didn't include them. Doc does mention that he learned this song from the recording of the Blue Sky Boys (Bill and Earl Bolick).

....Tiger

I'm Troubled - The Watson Family

A meeting is a pleasure,
And a parting is grief
But a false-hearted lover,
Is worse than a thief.

A thief can but rob you,
And take what you save
But a false-hearted lover,
Takes you to your grave

    CHORUS
    I'm troubled, I'm troubled,
    I'm troubled in mind,
If trouble don't kill me, Lord,
    I'll live a long time.

The grave will decay you,
And turn you to dust.
Ain't one girl in a million,
That a poor boy can trust

They'll hug you, they'll kiss you,
They'll tell you more lies
Than the cross ties on the railroad
Or the stars in the sky.

    CHORUS

I'm goin' to Georgia,
I'm goin' to roam;
I'm goin' to Georgia
Gonna make it my home.

Gonna build me a cabin
On a mountain so high
Where the wild birds and turtledoves
Can hear my sad cry.

    CHORUS

This is also much closer to the version that Jerry Garcia sings on the Old and in the Way Album, than the Lomax lyrics that I posted earlier. (Thanks Joe for fixing up my line breaks).

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M TROUBLED IN MIND (spiritual)
From: wysiwyg

This is listed at the Park New Choir's site as a Negro Spiritual-- anyone know if it's related? Seems to scan right and have the same feel...

I'M TROUBLED IN MIND
Traditional Negro Spiritual
REFRAIN:
I'm troubled, I'm troubled
I'm troubled in mind
If Jesus don't help me I surely will die.

Oh Jesus, my Saviour, on thee I'll depend
When troubles come near me
You'll be my true friend

When ladened with trouble
And burdened with grief
To Jesus in secret I'll go for relief.

Subject: Lyr Add: I AM A-TROUBLE IN DE MIND (slave song)
From: masato sakurai
Date: 20 Sep 01 - 02:19 PM

The spiritual is also in Allen et al.'s Slave Songs of the United States (pp. 30-31) as "I am a-trouble in de mind":

I am a-trouble in de mind,
O I am a-trouble in de mind;
I ask my Lord what shall I do,
I am a-trouble in de mind.

I'm a-trouble in de mind,
What you doubt for?
I'm a-trouble in de mind.

Masato
