Subject: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: GUEST,goddard@ireland.com Date: 19 Sep 00 - 08:48 AM We were listening to a Mary O´Hara L.P. the other night (an L.P. from 1958) and one of the songs took our fancy. The song is called "The Wexford Mummer´s Song" but actually concerns two women, P***? Grey and Nancy Hogan, who "lived in Derry Town, in Derry Town in Troden/Shroden"(?). They each buy a pig, whose tails are cut off by two blackguards. When they (the women) die (the day after eachother) they are buried by some more blackguards (or possibly the same ones). It´s a short song and probably one of many Wexford Mummer´s songs. We managed to get most of the words down but are unsure of a couple of things - particularly the name of the first woman and just what Troden or Shroden might be. If anyone knows the words to the whole song then please get in touch. All the best from Tim & Sussie |

Subject: Lyr Add: WEXFORD MUMMER'S SONG (from Mary O'Hara) From: Alice Date: 19 Sep 00 - 09:04 AM I thought I had already added these lyrics on another thread, but can't find them in a forum search or the DT.
THE WEXFOR MUMMER'S SONG
In Derry town there dwelt two maids,
Fa la la la la la
Now these two maids led an awful life,
Fa la la la la la....
Now Nancy bought a little pig,
Fa la la la la la....
Now these two pigs were out one day,
Fa la la la la la....
Now Nancy died of a Saturday night,
Fa la la la la la....
Now these two maids are dead and gone,
Fa la la la la la.... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: MMario Date: 19 Sep 00 - 09:17 AM Alice - we're still shy the tune. Are you midi capable yet? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: Robby Date: 19 Sep 00 - 09:40 AM I wonder if this is the same LP that was later reissued as part of collection of 150 Irish songs, jigs, etc., which, in addition to Mary O'Hara, featured Judy Mahan, David Hammond, John McCormack, the Gallowglass Cieli Band, as well as the Clancys and Makem. In any event, I too appreciate having the words to this song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: Wolfgang Date: 19 Sep 00 - 09:42 AM Robby, to the best of my knowledge: yes Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: Alice Date: 19 Sep 00 - 02:17 PM MMario, no I can't make a midi. I can send a sound file to someone who can make a midi for the DT. Let me know who wants the music (mp3). Alternatively, get Mary O'Hara's recording. She belongs in every collection (my opinion). Just look in CD now and you will find several, including the one with this song. Alice |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: Susanne (skw) Date: 20 Sep 00 - 07:52 PM Robby, I agree with Wolfgang. I've got the 5-LP-set, and Alice sent me the notes from her LP - mine is obviously a reissue. Have you got it? - Susanne |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wexford Mummer´s Song From: Robby Date: 21 Sep 00 - 02:51 PM Hi Susanne. Yes, I have the 5-LP set also. I can't remember when I got it, but I think it was in the mid to late 70s. I believe that set is a re-issuance of prior releases by, at least some, if not all of the artists in the collection because I have some original 78rpm recordings by John McCormack, one of which is so old, it is only cut on one side.
