Subject: RE: BS: What is a mummer? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 22 Aug 04 - 04:54 PM Nuts! I just checked out the Marvelous Mummers site more thoroughly and they've deleted the photos that used to be on there of some members dressed in really outlandish costumes. We're talking get-ups that make the sequinned Uncle Sam suits in their group photo look absolutely conservative by comparison. Six-foot tall feather head-dresses and the like. Stuff that would turn a Las Vegas showgirl's head. I guess now that they've recruited more members not everyone can afford to dress in costumes costing a tenth of their annual salary. By the way, the reason I know of their website is because I was actually considering answering an audition call for the group a couple of years ago. Hell, I can play "Bill Bailey" and "Ain't She Sweet" and that kinda stuff. Fortunately, I checked their website first and decided that the music couldn't possibly be enough fun to make up for having to dress like that. |

Subject: RE: BS: What is a mummer? From: PoppaGator Date: 23 Aug 04 - 02:18 AM In Philadelphia, there is a long tradition of "Mummer" string bands organized to perform in a New Years Parade. They wear wildly colorful costumes, and the musical sound is quite distinctive -- heavy on saxophones and banjos, unusual instrumentaiton for marching bands. At least one of these Philly Mummer bands shows up for a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans each year; this has been going on for a few years now -- it's not a time-honored tradition, although it might become one.
