Subject: lyrics for From: awaterbury@iclub.org Date: 29 Aug 98 - 02:36 PM I have been trying to find the lyrics for two lines of "Aire for County Derry" by Horold Arnold Walter for quite a while. It begins: "I would be true, for there are those who trust me. I would be pure, for there are those that care. I would be strong, for there is much to suffer. I would be brave, for there is much to dare. I would be hmble, for I know my weakness, I would look up, laugh, love, and live." If you know the two missing lines or can direct me to a source, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you

Subject: ADD: I Would Be True From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Aug 98 - 02:48 PM Well, that was easier to find than I expected. Westminster Abbey (click here) has a very interesting Web site, and they still have Princess Diana's funeral program posted. You'll find full information about the song you requested there, and I think you may be able to find some discussion about it if you enter a phrase from the song in our forum search (or, click here). I'll post the lyrics here for you, too. -Joe Offer- The prayers will conclude with the offering of a prayer for the congregation, after which the choristers will sing:
Air from County Derry in G - Petrie; The Ancient Music of Ireland (1853), commonly known as 'O Danny Boy' I couldn't find any reference to Horold Arnold Walter, so I don't know if you're correct in thinking he's the one who wrote the lyrics. Anybody know the name of the author for sure? It isn't Petrie, is it? Alison you know these things - can you tell us? |
Subject: RE: lyrics for From: Barbara Date: 29 Aug 98 - 03:20 PM Interestin', Joe. I know a different tune to those words. Definitely NOT Danny Boy. I learned it as a hymn, back in my misspent youth. Here's the words from the CyberHymnal, where they also have the tune that I am familiar with. Thanks for point the way to that site, I've been enjoying it since. Blessings, Barbara Words: Howard Arnold Walter, 1906. Walter wrote this hymn while living in Japan. He sent it to his mother, who forwarded it to Harper's Magazine, which published it.
Music: Joseph Yates Peek, 1911 (MIDI, score). Alternate tune: "Intercessor," Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (1848-1918) (MIDI, score). Joseph Peek (1843-1911) was a Methodist lay minister.
I would be true, for there are those who trust me;
I would be friend of all--the foe, the friendless;
I would be faithful through each passing moment;

Subject: RE: lyrics for From: BSeed Date: 30 Aug 98 - 12:36 AM Awaterbury, Joe, Barbara--I tried to submit a message twice this afternoon, but I guess the threads server was having problems. I learned this song in church groups when i was a teenager with at least two of the three verses Barbara gave, to a tune very much like the chorus of "Take Back Your Gold." the last line of the second verse, as I learned it, was halfway between the two versions: "I would look up, and laugh, and love, and live." The third verse sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't think we usually sang it. Joe, the words fit Londonderry Air(e)* beautifully (if you have all three ands in the aforementioned line. --see

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Would Be True (Howard Arnold Walter) From: GUEST,Gideon Date: 10 Nov 10 - 10:45 PM I believe there were two stanzas in the original H.A.W. composition, though lately I've seen some "thirds." Last June I added an even another third in connection with my investiture as president of a small college in the southern Philippine island/region of Mindanao (the name of the college is Gingoog Christian College in Gingoog City, province of Misamis Oriental. This is a voluntary commitment that I divide my year: June-November here, and December-May at home with my family in Oregon) Here is my humble suggested "third" stanza: "I would be bold to face each new tomorrow; I would be ready God's will to obey; I would be keen and kind in joy or sorrow; I would serve God each day in every way; I would serve God each day in every way." I remember in my childhood and youth that this hymn was a favorite most especially at dedication services, often sung as Hymn/Song of Dedication. My hair still stands on ends whenever I sing it or hear it sung. Thanks. Gideon Z.
