I've been doing this song for around thirty years... I usually chuck a few Uncle Joe's around the audience before we start singing! Yes - at least one ends up in someone's beer! It's not very easy to represent in notation, as the words vary slightly (even between performances!), so this is a rough guide as to how the tune goes. It's up to you to figure out how the words fit! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Uncle Joe's Mint Balls From: BUTTERFLY Date: 03 Apr 03 - 02:57 AM I was under the impression that "Uncle Joe's Mint Balls" were mythical, but that Mike Harding in his introduction to the song UJMB on a vinyl album (which I have somewhere) referred to "Fisherman's Friend", a cough sweet made by Lofthouse of Fleetwood, Lancashire. Ironically I have become acquainted with the latter over the last few months in an attempt to counter a cough/catarrh which I have had since early December 20002 (and still have). If anyone can confirm that Uncle Joe's Mint Balls exist in real life (and did so before Mike Harding released his song) I would be interested. Perhaps it is a case of life imitating art, and someone started producing Uncle Joe's Mint Balls in response to the song. I am reminded of a television advert for "Yellow Pages", in which an aging (but fictitious) author ("J.P. Hartley") eventually tracks down a copy of a book "Fly Fishing" by one J.P. Hartley. However I think an enterprising publisher later got in on the act and released a real book called Fly Fishing" by "J.P. Hartley" (ghost written by someone else of course!). I think in the verse about the coalman's horse in UJMB, MH sings "It gave a cough then buggered (not beggared) off.." This would fit in with Mike's frequent use of this colourful expression! I also thought that it was "Give them to your granny and watch the bugger go" (even though this word is generally applied to males) though I could be wrong about the latter. I also think the tune, though not absolutely identical to Lonnie Donegan's "My Old Man's a Dustman" must be based on it. |

In case you're interested, if you get the train up the west coast main line and shortly after you pull out of Wigan look to the right you will see the end of a row of shops adorned with a large painted advert for the afore mentioned products. I remember hearing this song years ago & I'd completely forgotten about it. It's a cracker. Can anyone supply some suitable guitar chords for the MOMAD tune? |
