Tonbridge Folk Club Tonbridge Folk Club (Nellie's) meets on the first and third Mondays of each month from 8-11 pm at: Foresters Arms, 52 Quarry Hill, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 2RT. On guest nights a hat collection is taken for the guest and a minimum contribution of £5 (or what you can afford) is suggested. Musicians, singers and audience welcome. (Note: No meeting first Monday in May.)

Following a brief period of homelessness, Tonbridge Folk Club (Nellie's) relaunched last night in our new venue - the Rose and Crown - with an excellent guest performance by Liz Randall and Mick Lynn and lively tunes and floor singing.

The venue is comfortable and roomy, the accoustics are good, there is no threat of noise pollution, and the bar sells Abbot Ale, one of my personal favourites!

Thanks to everyone, performers and audience, for supporting the event!

Ah, just got home from seeing a performance of Sink the Belgrano at Tonbridge School which some of the boys were doing for an AS Level exam. Let me tell you that they were brilliant.

Alas, the bad weather conditions mean that we have decided to postpone Monday 20th December and the club will be closed. I'll be singing there another time and you can be cetain I'll let you all know when that is *grin*

Meanwhile, stay safe and warm, and if there is bad weather near you, don't travel unless you really have to.

Mon 19 Dec 2011: Pig's Ear Benefit Evening

In view of the recent tragic death of Grant Rule, Pig's Ear have indicated their inability to perform a Christmas programme, which we all fully understand. We therefore plan to have our own "home grown" concert instead, and invite everyone to give generously towards a trust fund which is being set up in Grant's name. In view of the pleasure which they have given to so many people over the years, we feel that this is the least that we can do.

What a nice idea. We have been lucky enough on several occasions to be able to use daughter Lindsay in our band. She lowers our average age and contributes a nice melody instrument to the mix.

Easter bank holidays can be a bit dead on the folk scene so you may be interested to know that there is a singround at Nellie's (Tonbridge Folk Club) on Easter Monday evening.

Isn't that being just a little bit disengenuious to the organisers of the weekend of folk at the Vigo, see thread - Vigo Inn - Easter Folk and Ale! (UK).
They seem to have gone to a lot of trouble to book top line local artists for each day.

I'm sure no slight was intended- an indication perhaps that publicity doesn't always get through. As far as we know, no-one from the Vigo venture has sent anything to Nellies- and none of us knew! Good luck to all- Nellies is just ensuring that regulars are kept informed that the fortnightly meeting will take place despite it being a bank holiday.

There is at least one other event that weekend which will have national level names in a relaxed intimate setting, but it is invitation only. There are also some good rock events - check out Modraphenia at Earls in Maidstone for example.

The Vigo event is both on here and on Facebook. Don has been diligent in publicising it, and some of the "top-line local artists" are skilled self-publicists (no insult intended, Kevin).

I tend to use Google both in order to find things and as a yardstick of our own profile.

I am sure members of Tonbrige FC were not intending to be at odds with other attractions, my posting was only intended to draw attention to the fact that the area is not so devoid of folk song activity over Easter as may have been perceived.
However, whilst I was aware of happenings at the Vigo I too have not seen much publicity and the thread on this Forum does not seen to have generated the same level of activity as some previous events.
Good luck to both venues on Monday evening; local folk enthusiasts should appreciate the choise on offer and I hope give their support to whichever one best suits their style.

I find that facebook will provide me with "suggested events" of which I have not previously heard, and I also watch the ticker tape to see what other people amongst my fiends are going to. If a pub (where an event is occurring) also has a facebook site one can crosslink to spread the word too. So yes I think facebook does help.
