Subject: Request- tortoise song
From: Harriet

I once heard a song about someone who had a pet tortoise which got run over and so they made its shell into plectrums. Does anyone know the words / music / chords? Ta. (I think it was called the tortoise song.)

It is called "The Tortoise" and is sung by the Corries on the "Barrett's Privateers" tape. If someone else doesn't come up with them I'll listen to the tape and copy the words for you.

THE TORTOISE

He was just a lonely tortoise, looking for a home
His little feet were blistered with the miles he had to roam.
I found him in a pet shop, on his cheek there was a tear
And painted on his little back was "twenty pence to clear."

Chorus:
He's a faithful friend, the tortoise, he'll love you til the end
And you won't need a person with a tortoise for a friend.

I took him from the pet shop, tied to a piece of string
I'm sure that he was happy for I thought I heard him sing
I took him to my sports car, we had many's the mile to go
I tied him to the bumper, he was grateful for the tow.

Chorus:

In winter he would hibernate, yes, we'd both retire
And when his little feet got cold I'd place him on the fire.
In summer by the swimming pool I was so proud of him.
I'd throw him in and then he'd sink. I don't think that he could swim.

Chorus:

Then came the day that's coming to all creatures great and small
A drunken driver hit my friend, He smashed him against the wall
When I arrived all I could find were little bits of shell
I made them into plectrums, I know my plectrums well.

I can't do anything about the music. Sorry. I hope someone else will.

OK, is it only me, or am I the only one brave enough to admit it... What is a plectrum?

Mrrzy: Plectrum = guitar pick (or mandolin, banjo, whatever)

Can anyone please help me with words and/or music for folk song with a chorus of:

He's a faithful friend the tortoise,
And he'll love you to the end,
And you'll never need a person
With a tortoise for a friend.

1. He was just a lonely tortoise, he was looking for a home,
his little feet were blistered from the many miles he'd roamed,
I met him in a pet shop, on his cheek there was a tear,
and painted on his little shell, was 5 new pence to clear.

Chorus: He's a faithful friend the tortoise, and he'll love you till the end,
and you'll never need a person, with a tortoise as a friend.

2. I took him from that pet shop, he was tied to a piece of string,
he was happy in his freedom, you know I think I heard hi, sing,
I took him to my sports car, we had 20 miles to go,
I tied him to the bumper, he was grateful for the tow.

3. In winter we would hibernate, my friend and I would retire,
and if he ever got too cold, I'd just throw him on the fire,
In summer we would spend our time down by the swimming pool,
I'd throw him in, he often sank, you know I don't think he could swim.

4. Then come that day, as come it may, to creatures great and small,
a drunken driver hit my friend, and he went against the wall,
and all around all I could find were little pieces of shell,
so I made them into plectrums, you know I knew this plectrum well.
