Helen, it's been many long years since I saw that movie and, while I remember one or two scenes where Danny Kaye's character sings to his screen daughter, I couldn't remember details such as a swing or where the song took place.

Jennie, I looked up that song but it doesn't mention sunshine or happiness. The video clip shows him singing to a little girl, but she's not on a swing. It might be another song from that movie.

I searched Danny Kaye Five Pennies and it showed a list of videos from the movie.

You are correct, MtheGM, that over here in the good ol' US of A we pronounce Mr. Rathbone's name "bazzle" (as well as Mr. Fawlty's name), but we pronounce the name of the herb "bay-zul".

Tschaikowsky' from Lady in the Dark from Lady in the Dark was his career changer
with Gertrude Lawrence in one of the few musicals that was not adapted from a book but had an original story.

Danny Kaye (nee: Danny Kaminsky from Brooklyn) was a major talent but it must
be emphasized that Danny did not write his songs.

Sylvia Fine, his wife, was the author of those marvelous ditties. She was one of
the best lyricists and unsung heroines of the musical state.

Oddly enough, Sid Caeser, TV personality was born a Kaminsky too.

"Sir Basil Metabolism" in Manic Depressive Pictures Present is dependent on the US pronunciation of the name Basil, the same as 'basal', which that sort of metabolism is. Over here the joke falls flat, because the name is always pronounced with a short a, as is the herb 'basil', pronounced 'bazzle'. I believe that, even over there, the name of the British actor, the villainous/Holmesian Rathbone, is pronounced our way?

Since there are so many Danny Kaye fans still around how come we can't get a DVD out of Up in Arms? Anyway, I was searching for the lyrics to the Theater Lobby Song in that show. My mother in law believed the opening line to be "It's Apple Blossum Time in Orange New Jersey" but my kids and I thought it was "It's Cherry Blossum Time..." Is there an official lyric site with this song on it so we can confirm the words? Thanks.

Don't know about kiddie songs. My mom was a Danny Kaye nut. Some of the songs he used in his live nightclub acts were later--umm--uh--cleaned up & included in some of his movies. Mom(Hally Wood) was living in NYC in the mid-late 1940s & she learned them at the nightclub. Much later, when my kids were little & we were living in So. Austin, Mom would come over from Houston to visit & sing some of these to the kids in their beds. Boy, did they pay attention. Of course, there are some other classics: the chalice from the palace holds the brew that is true (or maybe not); I learned very little highschool math, but I still understand that "The square of the hypotenuse of the right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the 2 adjacent sides". & there was 1 in "The Inspector-General" about choral singing that can make me hold my breath when I find it on. & there was a national anthem in that same movie about Grozny(Brozny?), the capitol city--of Chechnya!!!!??? During the attempted revolution there in the last cuppla yrs. I kept hearing the same city name. I could be wrong, but...Tw

I am being driven crazy by a tune that my grandparents used to sing to me when I was tiny (late 50's, early 60's maybe). There are no lyrics and they used to call it "the happy song" - a few years ago I sung it to a work colleague who thought it was a Danny Kaye song - has anyone any ideas? it was a sort of "doo be doo be doo" thing...

they sung it to me at as weel as something called "any umberellas" which I think was probably a wartime song (and not danny kaye)

Danny Kaye did indeed record MINNIE THE MOOCHER – in April 1941, on Columbia 36582 (b/w LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT LOVE).

I haven't heard the whole song, but I listened to a few samples. I also read some reviews and reports which called it a "signature piece" and a "spoof." He frequently performed this in concert and used it as an audience-participation piece.

Where Cab Calloway sang his "Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi" (etc.) in call-and-response fashion, with his band members supplying the responses, Kaye had the audience sing the responses. He then improvised more and more outlandish and complicated "scat" phrases, challenging his audience to repeat them. He even imitated other languages. I heard things that sounded vaguely like French, German, and Japanese, but I'm rather sure they were really gibberish.

Even when he sang "Ouvrez la fenêtre" (French for "open the window") he didn't pronounce it correctly—he stretched "fenêtre" out to 4 syllables: "fe-ne-te-ra."

I'm pretty sure he recorded it more than once.

Thank you, Snuffy, that's exactly who I mean, Glynis Johns. Maybe Jean was her character's name, although they nearly always called her 'The Captain'. BTW, Bednobs and Broomsticks is another of my favourites, again, taped from TV and watched ad nauseum. That has to be the best soccer match in history!

The pellet with the poison was in the vessel with the pestle, but then they broke the chalice from the palace. After that the pellet with the poison was in the flagon with the dragon, and the vessel with the pestle had the brew that is ... blue?

I absolutely adored Danny Kaye growing up. I videotaped 'The Court Jester' and 'Hans Christian Andersen' carefully editing out all of the ads. I must have watched them both hundreds of times, and used to delight in introducing friends to the wit and wisdom of this incredibly gifted entertainer. Even very young children used to love The Court Jester. There is so much in it. The scene where he is hiding in the bedroom after the witch puts the spell on him and every time fingers are clicked he switches personalities...the wagon ride with the Captain when he plays a deaf old man...the several languages spoken fluently by Giacomo...the hilarious scene where he is being knighted...I could go on and on! Now I'm going to go look for a copy on DVD - the videotape wore out a long time ago. Thanks for this thread, it's brought back a lot of happy memories!

Danny Kaye probably would have been GREAT on the old "Show of Shows," with that incredibly talented and uninhibited crowd. But such a towering multi-threat talent, sharing the stage with the great Caesar is hard to imagine. Also, a weekly grind, assembled week-to-week, such as those early TV shows were, did not lend themselves to finely honed, crafted and practiced bits - Danny Kaye's forte.

Let's not forget his most serious role in "Me and the Colonel". I love his comedies but this is the film I think of first.

The movies "Court Jester" & "Inspector General" are now on low priced DVDs, even collections - unfortunately not all of Dannye's things in the one set...

Ihave be trying to find the complete lyrics for years. Could it have been something cut out of the Court Jester? I seem to remember him wearing that sort of clothing while singing
