Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 11 Feb 18 - 09:49 AM "Seriously the Evangelical Christian World is in for a rough ride as a result of Trumpism" The Christian church in general is having a rough ride thanks to its own behavour regarding child-rape - if you hadn't noticed. "ad hominum insults" I come from a Christian (Irish Catholic) background I criticise what is happening - I never insult without reason What has happened has effected members of my own family directly and has thrown many, along with friends and neighbours into a crisis of belief If you find that unworthy of comment, you are very much in a minority Go count the empty churches Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 11 Feb 18 - 09:37 AM Seriously the Evangelical Christian World is in for a rough ride as a result of Trumpism. A clever self appointed reformer could lead many into a meaningful reformation away from Trumpism. I thought you might be a spiteful tool for good but here you merely sound like a tool and write ad hominum insults just like Trump. Also like Trump, you need a Mulligan since you're in an unplayable stylistic rut. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 10 Feb 18 - 12:03 PM The time is right for an atheist 'minister' to lead the flock of non believing church goers to greener truthful pastures. Not to an old morality but a morality everyone can feel 'Me too' and feel dignity again. To not follow a figure but agree with a Moral person who is truthful. In time more will agree. The pillars of democracy that are being nearly toppled will be held up by the hands of the new truthful. The choice between criminal political religion OR join the truth movement will be an easy choice, even for some of the old believers. The stumbling block of abortion&guns will have to be resolved for this reformation to succeed. This where I need more clever minds than mine to seek a good resolution. As you see most people will fall silent and actually help the transformation and mutual concessions. The social movement of 'me too', truthism and resist is breaking open a crack in the concrete wall of oppression and victimization. The time is as ripe as it gets to have a mutually beneficial revolution. Do not think of this as a Manifesto, think of this as where we are today. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 10 Feb 18 - 08:39 AM When Steve Shaw comes to this pub he often drinks Atheist Light but you pound down 200 proof Atheism straight up. I laugh at myself for drinking an Atheist smoothie. Of the fifty shades of atheism yours is the darkest. I'll remind you that dark is a hard sell. fear and anger is what fundamentalists and fascists use. Eventually it is to our advantage to make their fear and anger strategy the enemy and a tell tail of criminals. So jesushrike on a stick lighten up like - celestial fascist uber alles. that's kinda funny. Religion is most vulnerable now . Just look at 'The Mega Church of Perpetual Mulligans'. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 10 Feb 18 - 04:30 AM "I recall Quakers who posted here that became victimized in Iraq." As an atheist I don't concern myself with one brand name or another - persecution is persecution, whoever the perpetrators or victims are - one certainly doesn't justify another, as is often argued My concern is for the lack of humanity being shown in the name of one god against believers in another - surely fascism on a celestial level My Heaven Uber Alles God help us all Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 09 Feb 18 - 09:08 PM Jim you mentioned people 'here' have lost their lives due to religious dictates and extreme political prejudice. While avatars obscures names do you recall anything more about the victims? I recall Quakers who posted here that became victimized in Iraq. In my eyes your post has a worrisome side possibly due to a cultural disconnect or fatigue. I'll just focus on your factual knowledge side while abdicating my unintentional thread killing ability and declare you the reigning champion. It seems your aim overall is historic outrage while mine is originality and fascist warnings. Am I right? |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 09 Feb 18 - 07:13 PM "There is nothing wrong with being the voice for those who did not survive." I didn't say there was We are talking about controlled termination of pregnancy fort many reasons - nobody is specifying getting rid of a child because it might not be health - certainly I'm not Sex has many functions, procreation being only one of them "you did not ask, my mom survived too." I did not ask because I have no idea what your personal circumstances are Ending pregnancy within a restricted period is, as far as I'm concerned is a permissible act on the basis of the information that is privy to us The same with rape, incest and a threat to the mother's life (in most circumstances) It's a bit of a a cliché but modern society has decided that a woman has the right to control over her own body - again, up to a point - I've no problem with that IT is she who has to bear the child and usually, it is she who has to bear the responsibility for it - as a rule, men don't and are usually the ones to walk away from a difficult (or them) relationship Society, by and large, leaves the burden on the parent - usually the woman Usually. it is men who pontificate about it and draw up the rules - In thee case of the churches - the most vociferous and influential groups, it is largely elderly, supposedly celibate men at that. I'm with Sen 100% on this My empathy comes from my humanism (with a small "m") I came from a poor, but caring family environment where we were all loved equally - but we were surrounded by families who weren't that lucky - 'sink' estates tended to be like that, largely because of the fact that they were sited in the most deprived areas Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Senoufou Date: 09 Feb 18 - 04:12 PM Er...just a moment Donuel. My niece has Aspergers syndrome and is the most caring, kind and loving person I know. Just last week she was so sad to see a homeless woman begging in the snow outside her place of work that she paid for her to have a night in a B&B, to enjoy the warmth and use a shower etc. She booked the woman in herself and made sure she was comfortable. I was so proud of her. Where do you get the idea from that Aspergers people have no ability to feel for others? Regarding termination of pregnancy, I'm in the pro-choice camp. It's a woman's choice (ANY pregnant woman of ANY age) whether to proceed or not with a pregnancy. Terminations should be available under safe conditions with no stigma attached to the situation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 09 Feb 18 - 04:07 PM who hurt you |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 09 Feb 18 - 04:05 PM Your brand of passionate empathy seems to come from a place very personal. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 09 Feb 18 - 03:58 PM Lucky old you, I had to walk to school in the snow uphill both ways. and, although you did not ask, my mom survived too. Jim, There is nothing wrong with being the voice for those who did not survive. In fact there is a gallantry. Instead of using the tone of anger and fear alone, for those who can not scream for themselves, I suggest you reserve a tone for us who are still alive and are sustained and motivated by love. That is - Unless you have Asperger's syndrome and have an inability to relate to flesh and blood people. So the real question is who or what victimized you and your family? |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 09 Feb 18 - 03:30 PM I'm afraid you may be right - doesn't make it any less true though Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: keberoxu Date: 09 Feb 18 - 03:21 PM ....and if that doesn't kill this thread, then what does? |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 09 Feb 18 - 02:59 PM "Jim I am not a fundamentalist yet I am an abortion survivor." Lucky old you I know of women who died here because they were denied a life-saving termination because "we live n a Christian country" Several children over the last decade or so were forced to go through pregnancy despite the fact they had been raped - by family members or strangers One particularly nasty case involved an eleven year old daughter of itinerant land-workers who had been awarded two sexually transmitted diseases by her rapist yet was forced to undergo a life-threatening birth and told by her church to "embrace her martyrdom" Pregnancy termination is not about the likelihood off survival or future health of foetuses - it involves all sorts of often heartrending decisions If society is happy to send millions of young people to die on the battlefield or turn refugees back to murderous regimes or wars or certain starvation... or refuse to maintain a health sevice which is at present killing patients off through neglect and under-funding - then there has to be room for women to choose not give birth - up to an agreed point. We are still dominated by a Religion that covered up clerical child rape for many decades, still regards contraception as evil and is at present opposing law reforms that will enable Ireland to arrive at somewhere in the mid twentieth century compared to the rest of the civilised world I think it high time that such people learned to stay out of other people's bedrooms - that goes for all such voyeurs Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 09 Feb 18 - 01:51 PM Jim I am not a fundamentalist yet I am an abortion survivor. If the word is politically tinged like 'illegal alien' so be it but being only a survivor is already taken by holocaust victims or reality show contestants. Without exception we are all born survivors of war, plagues and an inherently violent universe. We simply differ by variations of certain abundancies and deficiencies. I am neither defined by a single experience or inclined to identify with victimhood. We are simply out here in surprising numbers, a testament to the tenacity of life like a flower in cracked concrete. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: beardedbruce Date: 09 Feb 18 - 07:55 AM A very moving poem. Thank you, Jim Carroll, for posting it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 09 Feb 18 - 07:39 AM "That was incredibly moving Jim" It is indeed Sen We used to use it regularly in feature evenings along with the adult and children's' versions of The Cruel mother on either side Pat is a great reader of poems, yet even she, along with the audience, was often reduced to tears after a reading Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Senoufou Date: 09 Feb 18 - 07:23 AM That was incredibly moving Jim. The poor lassie. And certainly a sort of 'thread killer' because one is lost for words after reading it. To me, it was more about rejection, suffering, moral condemnation and extreme poverty. And being driven beyond endurance by overwhelming circumstances. The abortion question is almost a secondary issue, though obviously a driving factor in the tragedy of her life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 09 Feb 18 - 06:55 AM I didn't touch on anything - Brecht wrote that beautiful display of humanity, not me, for which he has my undying respect The question of pregnancy termination ("the term abortion having been hi-jacked by the fundamentalists, should be incarcerated in the same prison as 'lunatic" and "spastic") " and all its fundamentalist connotations, is deserving a of a thread of its own (no doubt to be closed by that same fundamentalism) Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Donuel Date: 09 Feb 18 - 06:38 AM Jim Carrol , You have touched the electrified third rail of abortion. It has been said that no aborted fetus ever goes on to do anything. Again there are exceptions, after all this is earth. There have been survivors. What would you expect the survivors would say? What do you think an abortion survivor would say about the procedure, rights and laws? I would say the mother holds all the cards but society pretends it is the dealer of the card game. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Jim Carroll Date: 09 Feb 18 - 06:01 AM Or this Jim Carroll CONCERNING THE INFANTICIDE, MARIE FARRER by Bertolt Brecht (MacColl?s translation) Marie Farrer, born in April, No marks, a minor, rachitic, both parents dead, Allegedly up to now without police record, Committed infanticide, it is said, As follows: in her second month, she says, With the aid of a barmaid, she did her best To get rid of her child with two douches, Allegedly painful but without success. BUT YOU, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN, FOR MAN NEED HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN. She then paid out, she says, what was agreed And continued to lace herself up tight. She also drank liquor with pepper mixed in it Which purged her but did not cure her plight. Her body distressed her as she washed the dishes, It was swollen now quite visibly. She herself says, for she was still a child, She prayed to Mary most earnestly. BUT YOU, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN, FOR MAN NEEDS HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN. Her prayers, it seemed, helped her not at all. She longed for help. Her trouble made her falter And faint at early Mass. Often drops of sweat Broke out in anguish as she knelt at the altar. Yet until her time came upon her She still kept secret her condition. For no one would believe such a thing could happen, That she, so unenticing, had yielded to temptation. BUT YOU, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN, FOR MAN NEED HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN. And, on that day, she says, when it was dawn, As she washed the stairs, it seemed a nail Was driven into her belly. She was wrung with pain. But still she secretly endured her travail. All day long while hanging out the laundry, She wracked her brains until she got it through her head She had to bear the child, and her heart was heavy. It was very late when she went to bed. BUT YOU, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN FOR MAN NEEDS HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN. She was sent for again as soon as she lay down. Snow had fallen and she had to go downstairs. It went on till eleven. It was a long day. Only at night did she have time to bear. And so, she says, she gave birth to a son. The son she bore was just like all the others. She was unlike the others but for this There is no reason to despise this mother, YOU TOO, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN FOR MAN NEEDS HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN With her last strength, she says, because Her room had now grown icy cold, she then Dragged herself to the latrine and there Gave birth as best she could (not knowing when) But toward morning. She says she was already Quite distracted and could barely hold The child for snow came into the latrine And her fingers were half numb with cold. YOU TOO, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN FOR MAN NEEDS HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN Between the latrine and her room, she says, Not earlier, the child began to cry until It drove her mad so that, she says, She did not cease to beat it with her fists Blindly for some time till it was still. And then she took the body to her bed And kept it with her there all through the night. When morning came she hid it in the shed. BUT YOU, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN, FOR MAN NEEDS HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN. Marie Farrer, born in April, An unmarried mother, convicted, died in The Meissen penitentiary. She brings home to you all men's sin. You, who bear pleasantly between clean sheets And give the name "blessed" to your womb's weight, Must not damn the weakness of the outcast, For her sin was black but her pain was great. THEREFORE, I BEG YOU, CHECK YOUR WRATH AND SCORN FOR MAN NEEDS HELP FROM EVERY CREATURE BORN |
Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: beardedbruce Date: 07 Feb 18 - 12:09 PM This might kill off THIS thread... Sonnet 07/05/02 Bhan Sidhe DCLXXXVIII It was an odd noise that I heard, this night: Not quite a scream, but far more than a gasp, From moonless darkness, with no stars in sight. What is this coldness, that my insides clasp? Why do I weaken, hearing sound so far Only the echo reaches ear, yet mind Is twisted from intent? How can I bar Gate of imagination to wyrd bind? I fall, boneless with fright, and sweat breaks out; Bowels turn to water with despair. I weep, To lose all. I moan, but cannot give shout To more than whimper, nor my reason keep. She passes, and I live! Yet dare not rise For fear of seeing Death within her eyes. |

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of being and ideal grace. I love thee to the level of every day's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for right. I love thee purely, as they turn from praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806 - 1861 |

Subject: RE: BS: Thread Killers From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Feb 18 - 12:31 AM Well, no, Senoufou, the cats died - and now we have rats in the attic, so it's a tradeoff. The cats were a mess to clean up after, though. All we have to do with the rats, is take them out of the traps and bury them. My wife won't let me put them in the trash can, so I let HER bury them and do her little rat rituals... But did I ever tell you how cute my dogs are? I make up songs to sing to them and do a little dance, and they think I'm very entertaining and dance, too - and then they demand a treat, OR ELSE! Why don't humans think I'm entertaining? -Lonesome Joe- |
