My problem is that I DO understand a lot of this shit.... my other problem is that far too many others who claim THEY understand it also, don't agree with ME.

Nah you're not boring.
Unlike George Gobel who was boring yet charming in his own way, you can be incendiary.

I sense a majority here does not care or believe that Western Democracy is being shredded before their eyes via weaponized social media based on a hypnosis platform and frames of actual fake news propaganda.

It seems apparent I am the only hypnotist on this forum.
You may be able to verify my warnings regarding the use of mass hypnosis for nefarious means has been at least a 12 year project on this forum. No one here has ever told me they get it. So I will resign from all my warnings that have either been disbelieved or ignored.

So long Joe, for the most part you have been a pain in the ass.
As pains go its not a bad on but JAYSUS you can be THICK..

Sometimes, I wish I could post in the middle of a thread. I think it's because I don't have confidence in what I have to say and I think it will bore everyone to death and kill the thread, to boot. If my post were in the middle of the thread, it wouldn't be so damn obvious that I'm the one who killed it.
On the other hand, being boring is a lot nicer than some of the alternatives...

Acme, not challenging the disclosure in your post,
just commenting:
some of the spam has been noticeable even to Mudcatters like me.
Spooked me the first time I saw an old thread
revived by somebody someplace where Russian is spoken.

The statement that there is more spamming at Mudcat than we members see
is most plausible.

NOT to be confused with Nazi snacks.

Apart from moderators choice, I would say the more appropriate description might be:

Interest killers.

The subject, in the context of those who have engaged, has run it course.
Or the vituperate of this parish have commandeered the thread which amounts to the same thing to most of us. I would say "You know who you are" but actually, I don't think they do.

There are some names that if I see repeated in a thread also "kill" it for me and I don't bother reading as I know they'll just be arguing with each other rather than adding anything of substance.

"my mum used to make The Best rabbit pie!"
I can't eat rabbit - a hang-up from the time a friend's mother fed me a rabbit pie which had been badly prepared and full of broken bones
If I get a small bone in my mouth I'm ill for hours after
I'm sure there must be a named phobia for that
Philosophically I am a vegetarian - horrified by the idea of killing living creatures (except Everton supporters), but as most Northern English vegitarians would have starved to death before they reach the age of five, I've never been ably to practice my philosophy.
One of our first Traveller singers gave us songs about Rabbit-skin selling - his uncle was a practitioner in rural Wexford in the early twentieth century

That sounds delicious Backwoodsman! I miss my old colleague who used to go shooting at the weekends, then give me the odd pigeon, rabbit or pheasant to skin/pluck. My mother taught me how to do this, and the resulting meals were gorgeous.
I expect a thread 'dies' because everything has been said and the topic has been well and truly explored.

Senoufou, Jim - my mum used to make The Best rabbit pie! She used to include an onion cut in two, with a clove stuck into each half - made the meat taste wonderful (a trick she learned from my gran, who had been the cook/housekeeper for a gentleman-farmer).

I think most people post like a cat using its sand box.
They put it down and it gets covered up.

If there is such a thing as a thread killer do you have any examples?

Well, I agree that a 'nice' little bit of gentle chatting can be calming, but a fierce contretemps between a few very heated protagonists can be quite exciting and stimulating.
(But not when things turn nasty and hurtful insults are flying through the air)
Haha Raggytash, everyone seems to like my husband. He's very smiley and gentle, and helps old folk in the supermarket, people in wheelchairs etc. At work I'm told he trundles all the very heavy wheelie bins outside for the less-muscular cleaners. He has a rather unnerving habit of hoisting items onto his head to carry them!

While they're not dead, the there are a few hammer-and-tongs arguers, duos whose lengthy point-counterpoint contributions grow like mold in the bottom of some threads that no one else will touch. Those are as good as dead. Anything about Israel. Most of the British political ones.

Yes, I know the question had to do with a sudden lack of interest in threads that started on a reasonable topic, but the other answer to that question is the threads that everyone else ignores (except the combatants).

Then there are threads that have dropped out of sight for ages but come to life again when bots or spammers find and post spam in them. Before the spam post can be removed someone jumps in and revives the old discussion and the conversation continues from five, ten, fifteen years ago. Only if you look at the behind-the-scenes moderator view of the thread do you see the one (or more) spam posts that brought it back to the surface.

Thoughts and behavior can be modified by social media and the clever application of rewards. It happens here but not intentionally. On Twitter and Facebook it is deliberate in many cases. There have been cases of psychological experimentation by sending specific reporting to specific audiences to discover opinion manipulation effectiveness.

Our Id knows better but our ego is a real sucker.

I tell myself the swme as BWL. Isn't there a name for the unresolvable doubt one feels after killing a thread? So-and-so's dilemma, or something?

What bothers me more is trying, sometimes repeatedly, to kill a thread that I can't stand but can't ignore, and it just keeps grnding away.

We should be glad there is no Facebook 'like' feature here.
We all like an ego stroke but were fine without it. Wisdom is seldom rewarded, it is just accepted as true. I try to give kudos to some posts but it gets corny after awhile. Besides, tuning in just to get an ego snack gets to be shallow and addictive.

So we feel self doubt without a response but that's OK, it is better than feeling 'like envy'.

Personally, if I'm not bitching I'm probably alluding to something obscure that amuses me. Sounding preachy is something I try to avoid .

While my aim is to be original when I hear my ideas echo back to me from future voices it feels satisfying.

I say something that I just know is brilliant and inspiring and ultimately wise, and nobody posts anything in response. The more brilliant and inspiring and wise my posts are, the more likely they are to kill a thread.
