Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,TEE Date: 28 Jun 08 - 04:01 AM Update on Pickering Folk Festival - June 28th Latest additions to the weekend's festivities include fabulous new singer/somgwriter Jon Lacey appearing on the second stage, first up on Saturday lunchtime. As was previously announced, Wendy arrowsmith will be appearing on Sunday lunchtime on the second stage. The line-up for both main stages in now complete. In addition, great festival favourites, reggae band T&LaTouche, will be performing at the LNE on Saturday night from 00.15 until 2am. We have added ceilidhs to the programme on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and they will be held in the Events Arena. Please note one programme change - Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick will now be appearing last on the main stage on Sunday afternoon and not, as previously published, first on in the evening. Jo Freya's 'Lal Waterson Project' will now be first on in the evening. We have been asked by several customers. who is Liam O'Maonlai and why is he headlining? ? Liam is the lead singer with The Hothouse Flowers and a great sean nos singer and multi-instrumentalist. That's why he's headlining the second stage on Saturday evening. Ticket are currently selling extremely well and we would advise any potential customers to book sooner rather than later. |

The organisers (www.theeventsoffice.co.uk) based in Pickering are hoping for a good turnout and if successful will make a good anual event Dennis |

Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 01 May 08 - 04:29 PM Let me apologise for my outburst earlier. I feel slightly embarrassed about it now. I do get very annoyed when individuals make assumptions about various things that affect me. I'm sorry but that's just the way I am. I shall make a point too of calling the Pickering festival organisers as I appear to have painted them in a bad light too, particularly as I've now been accused of being part of their team. Once again, I'm sorry. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: Herga Kitty Date: 01 May 08 - 04:11 PM Alie is listed in Tee's opening post as performing with Steve on Sunday afternoon (Second Stage), so I'm not surprised she's posted that she'll be going. I think I'll be in South Zeal, though, so will have to meet up with the Beer Token some other time! (Whitby?) Kitty |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Beer Token Date: 01 May 08 - 07:08 AM This is all becoming a bit nasty people. I'm with Alie. Why don't you all just go to whatever fetival that you all want to go to and not get so personal about it. Me - I'm probably going to go to Pickering. If any other catters are going it'd be nice to meet up. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 01 May 08 - 06:18 AM My dear Badger, I am NOT involved with Pickering or any other festival other than wanting to attend. I felt the need to defend this festival and it's organisers for a several reasons. 1) I'm an ardent fan of most of the acts that are appearing at Pickering 2) I'm an ardent fan of this kind of 'greenfield' festival 3) I hate f*****g bullies, and that's exactly what you are! Why don't you give the organisers a break. I hope they sell out with this event and make lots and lots of fast bucks. 4) I have EVERY understanding of what a folk festival is. I've been to enough. 5) Why would I want to interview stewards dickbrain? I'm contemplating being one! Duh!!! 6) Regarding 'cheap advertising' - This is the LAST place I'd want to advertise a DECENT folk festival if I were the organiser. Talk about falling on deaf ears. 7) Methinks that maybe YOU have an axe to grind. Is it affecting ticket sales? Your friend - The Input |

Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: theleveller Date: 01 May 08 - 03:12 AM Sorry, Tig, didn't understand a word of that. Take more water with it. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: Tig Date: 30 Apr 08 - 08:01 PM Just another greenfield festival. What do I see? A greenfield. What date is it - oh, must be Pickering! How marvellous to be in Pickerings greenfield, with its individual GRASS - and perhaps bespoke MUD. Guest The Input is either the organiser or a lackey who has decided to swoop on Mudcat as cheap advertising. Got your stewards interviewed yet Input? You appear to lack any understanding of what a folk festival is but understand too well what a fast buck is. The Badger. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: daughter Date: 30 Apr 08 - 07:41 PM YEP, Input (whoever you are?!) I'm going! I'll be spending some of the season Morris dancing, some of the season singing in sessions, some of it watching local artists at tiny traditional village festivals and some of it taking in big concerts at a whole range of atmospheric venues (small to enormous)! Why do we always have to have this old chestnut of a debate? Most people are actually agreeing here deep down - there are individual artists and bands we may love and some we don't, it's not about whether they fit some mould or certain criteria or not! These constant trad vs commercial debates actually create the wrong impressions of supporters of both - traddies aren't as cliquey as they are portrayed and "main-stream" (for want of a much better word) concert goers are not as scathing about us finger-in-the-ear types as would be suggested. Anyway, have a big hug and allow threads like these to stick to their point - giving useful and welcome information about more wonderful music events........ that's getting a bit too loving and groovy now, isn't it. See you at Pickering those that are going and see you on different threads about other festivals! Alie x |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: The Sandman Date: 30 Apr 08 - 03:47 PM I am not implying anything just stating a fact.Iknow nothing about Pickering that is why I would show loyalty to Saltburn, thats mychoice. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 30 Apr 08 - 02:18 PM I wasn't aware it was a competition Captain B. Anyway, "whenever he has booked me he has treated me fairly' - what are you implying? That the Pickering crowd won't? We have been here before and I'm ready for round two! :-) I guess you can kiss any future gigs at Pickering Folk Festival goodbye then. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: The Sandman Date: 30 Apr 08 - 02:00 PM If I had the choice I would go to Saltburn. but I will be busy gigging here in Ireland . Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,TEE Date: 30 Apr 08 - 01:12 PM We have been asked on several occasions if there will be a free bus shuttle service from the festival site to the town. I can confirm that this will be the case and that the shuttle bus will run all weekend. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: LesB Date: 30 Apr 08 - 11:22 AM Like I said we all have different tastes. But please don't go around pidgeon holing people & lumping them together. I have plenty of time for post 1975 music (why 1975?) & I don't care what other people listen to & I don't feel the folk scene should head in any particular direction, it will evolve & change, as is it's nature. Incidently life has never been "cosy & fluffy". Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 30 Apr 08 - 10:54 AM Confrontational and aggressive Les? I think you'll find it's simply telling it like it is and having a different opinion. I haven't 'rubbished' anything you've said. I simply differed. I'm afraid that life isn't all cosy and fluffy. There are many, many people on here that belong to the clique. Many of you seem to know each other, you (nearly) all have the same taste and opinions of exactly what folk music is. You have virtually no time for anything post-1975 and hate it when anybody comes along with their own interpretration of folk music, folk festivals and which direction THEY would like the whole folk scene to head in. As for your choice of festivals; Shepley - Yes Saddleworth - No Warwick - Yes Fylde - Yes Shrewsbury - Yes Saltburn - No My choices are; Pickering, Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Rochester, Towersey. All of which I would go to at the drop of a hat. Happy daze! |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: LesB Date: 30 Apr 08 - 10:25 AM Why does (Guest the input) have to be aggressive & confrontational all the time? ( and seeing as he has decended on us suddenly & has such a lot to say why does'nt he stand up & be counted & join)? I didn't rubbish anyone else's choice of music, the line up is just not my taste. If anybody is interested in my idea of a good festival line up.(probably not) Then the ones that spring to mind this year are Shepley:- Peggy Seegar, The Watersons, Bellowhead, Bella Hardy Crucible, Whapweasal, Demon Barbers, Askew Sisters, Spiers & Boden, John T & Barry C, etc (can't go dancing at Moulton, sorry Bry) Saddleworth:-Chris W & Julie M, Nancy Kerr & James Fagin, MawkinCausley, A J Clarke, Bill Whalley & Dave Fletcher, Mary Humphries & Anahata, Flossie etc. ( I am going) Warwick:- Bellowhead, Oysterband (i'd give them a miss), Breabach, Jez Lowe & the Bad Pennies, Mrs Ackroyd Band, Bob Fox, Rachel Unthank, The Wilsons, Roy Bailey & Tony Benn. (can't go) Fylde:- Show of Hands( Sun). John Tams & Barry Coope (BBC Radio 2 Best Folk Duo - Fri). Tim Van Eyken Trio(Sat.). The Omega3. Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies. Nancy Kerr & James Fagan. Debby McLatchy (USA). Uiscedwr. Bernard Wrigley(Thurs). Mad Agnes(USA). Bruce Mathiske(AUS). Keith Donnelly. Askew Sisters(BBC Folk Awards Finalists). Daimh (Scot). Strawhead. Flossie(Fra). 4Square. Isambarde. Tom Topping Band. Ruth Notman Trio(BBC Folk Awards Finalist). Alan Bell Band. Brian Preston Duo. Bryony. Gary & Vera Aspey. Cross o Thands. Vicky Swann & Jonny Dyer. (i'll be there) Shrewsbury looks good oh & Saltburn too. (both a bit too close datewise to my weeks hol in Whitby). Like I said before we all like different things. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 30 Apr 08 - 07:38 AM Hi Alie. I take it you're going then? |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: daughter Date: 30 Apr 08 - 07:36 AM Pickering?..............Can't wait! Alie x |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 30 Apr 08 - 04:49 AM I think that they're probably worried that 'their' folk music will be swallowed up by the obvious success of my kind of folk music. I read on here that apparently, Billy Bragg can't sing. Neither can 95% of singers that I've heard in singarounds up and down the country over the last 40 years (and when I say 95%, I'm being generous). The fact that 95% of them can't sing doesn't detract from the fact that their audience loves it. This is most peoples idea of folk music. It's (invariably) my idea of hell! |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Beer Token Date: 30 Apr 08 - 04:41 AM I don't care if it's folk or rock. Call it what you want. It's still a brilliant lineup. Why do so many people have a strict interpretation of what is and isn't folk music? |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Input Date: 30 Apr 08 - 04:37 AM Spot On Paul. It's all so f*****g precious. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: theleveller Date: 30 Apr 08 - 04:26 AM Why do we have to have strict demarcations on the type of artist? I wouldn't exactly call The Leveller, kd lang, Joan Armatrading or Martha Wainwright folk artists, but they're still appearing at Cambridge. You either like them or you don't. Perhaps it should be called The Pickering Largely Folk With A Bit of Cross-Over Thrown In Festival. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST Date: 30 Apr 08 - 02:22 AM A Rock Fest Les? I don't see that at all. Friday's Rock offering is a total of one act out of eight, The Waterboys, and they're playing an acoustic gig. . Saturday has ummmmm none (assuming that Chris Difford doesn't get the rest of Squeeze to go along)! Sunday has ummmmm none! It looks to me like a very good folk festival that has, admittedly, gone for the jugular but where's the harm in that? |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: stallion Date: 29 Apr 08 - 01:20 PM Guest? For one Pickering is a long way off the beaten track and well away from any concentrations of people, for two there are a lot of well established festivals in the vicinity, Saltburn being one and a limited amount of cash/audience to go around them all. And finally there does not appear to be a gradual building into viable event but a "go for the jugular" and book top artists. It shows that they have great faith in their marketing skills and the drawing capacity of their performers. I think it is a brave thing to do and I wish them well. |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: LesB Date: 29 Apr 08 - 12:26 PM Funny old world in'it. One man's meat is another mans poison etc. As I have said on the other thread the line up does nothing for me. Sunday looks good but the rest of it looks more like a rock fest. But of course that's only my ouwn opinion. We are all different. Have a good time. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST,The Beer Token Date: 29 Apr 08 - 09:12 AM Wow! This looks like a terrific line-up. Where is Pickering? Did anyone go last year? |
Subject: RE: Pickering Festival - LINE UP (UK) From: GUEST Date: 29 Apr 08 - 02:20 AM 'I am astonished that someone had the balls to gatecrash Pickering on to the folk festival map" Why stallion? |
