Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Jed at Work Date: 04 Oct 00 - 03:45 PM Bardford - on Oct 21 you can't go wrong by visiting YOBB in Fort Worth (the pub in this thread). We'll in Oklahmoa during that time. Try the Dubliner on GREENVILLE AVE in Dallas 214-818-0911, or the Emerald Mist in Dallas at 972-671-6478 or you might try Poor Davi'ds Pub in Dallas at 214-821-9891. There's sure to be good music at all of these clubs. Poor David's is one of the nation's oldest and bets folk music venues. It's a bit of a dive, but has a great sound system, books top notch acts and has some wonderful history! Best of luck!

Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Bardford Date: 04 Oct 00 - 03:11 PM Sorry if this is an inappropriate interjection into this thread, but- where can I go in Dallas Sat. Oct 21-Tues Oct 24 for live folk/celtic/ type music? Or a good pub? Hoping to test drive Albert's bodhrans while I'm there. I'd love to check out the Wed. session, but that, alas, is not in the cards. I'll be in the market district, if that's any help. Thanks in advance. |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Date: 04 Oct 00 - 02:58 PM Yipppee... session night again at last. The song books are piled by the door and the faithful gas guzzler is pointed west in anticipation..... Slan Go Foill, Jeff |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Jed at Work Date: 02 Oct 00 - 02:51 PM Thanks. I am worn out today ... we'll see what Wed looks like. |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Date: 02 Oct 00 - 01:27 PM ok... I seem to remember you guys promising to make it this week.... Oh, well, I suppose we can't blame you for being successful and in demand... you will be missed. -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Jed at Work Date: 02 Oct 00 - 12:42 PM ... feels bumpy where I sit, but then I never had too much padding on that end. |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: guinnesschik Date: 02 Oct 00 - 12:28 PM That's "weeks." Still feels really early where I sit. |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: guinnesschik Date: 02 Oct 00 - 12:26 PM Ugh, me, too. I guess we'll make it back in a few wekks. Touring is Hell! (not) |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Jed at Work Date: 02 Oct 00 - 12:08 PM We got home from the Amarillo festival at 4AM today, and I have Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun booked ... I hate to say it, but I may miss this week at YOBB. |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Date: 27 Sep 00 - 11:53 AM Jed, I've been interested in that one since I heard you talk about it years ago at the quill sessions. I've kind of stayed away because it sounded waaaaay above my level, and I expected to be audience. I enjoy just sitting back and listening to a jam as much as anybody, but just playing audience hasn't been enough for me to clear the decks on a Thursday. Aaaaaanyway, I still want to make it if only to hear/see you and possibly young Jeff if he's around. Mimosa- good point on clearing it first. I hadn't thought that far, though Nick is one of the people who mentioned the off wednesday possibility to me. I was on such a "session-high" from my first session in months that I didn't pay attention, and don't exactly remember what he said. It probably would be a good idea to check. I think that I'll just drop in tonight with no expectations and see if anything starts (though my bodhran and song books just might sneak into the truck and come along for the ride) Jeff |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: JedMarum Date: 27 Sep 00 - 10:01 AM I can't make it - but I am planning on being there next week! RedCelt - if you're looking for a good session, ya gotta make the Sons of Hermann Hall jam on Thursday night. It's wide open, style wise, but they say "the only thing electric is the campfire'. It's gotta be the best one in Texas. There is normally two or even three rooms goin' and some great pickers, singers, songwriters. It's a really good bunch of folks. You might give it a shot, some Thursday (every Thursday, starting about 8). |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 27 Sep 00 - 09:15 AM I wasn't planning on it. If we do show, don't we need to make arrangements with the owners or someone? Mimosa |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Date: 26 Sep 00 - 06:09 PM anyone going to be there tomorrow? even though it's an off week, a few people made noise about showing up... |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 22 Sep 00 - 10:18 AM Branwen, when it's all guys there, any female is "girly", but you're pretty, and groovy, too.
It was nice having Waylon Fan & Jeff (nice of you to join the "cat - welcome) there. It really was different than it has been. I think every person who participates adds something different to the mix. I hope you'll be back to try it out again. Mimosa with the harp |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: JedMarum Date: 21 Sep 00 - 10:54 PM Sound like I missed a time. Damn! We'll be abck, though! |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:53 PM mine's a 16".. thanks for asking...(drum that is!) It's my understanding that he basically has one "model". When I chose mine, most of his drums seemed to be pitched a bit high for me, but I grew to like it. (also it's mellowed in the months that I've owned it.) The tone was a bit off last night as I let the skin dry out a bit. I need to care for it better. Albert sells most of his drums by mail/email. The advantage of living here in town, is that you will get some choice. He's only doing the red finish for now, but each drum is unique in look as well as sound. End of commercial. (Albert, if you see this, I want a commission from any resulting sales... or maybe a free lesson?!) Slan Go Fioll Jeff |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:33 PM thanks for the url, Jeff... Is your drum a 14" or 16"? Also, the site says the drums are available in different "tones"... is yours a specif model or tone? I really like what you had last night... did you get your tippers from this guy as well? -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:28 PM Branwen, here's the url for the Bodhran Maker: http://www.celticmusic.com/alfonso_bodhrans/ ... and I'll be there if I have to walk! (though I may actually try to warm up the voice a wee bit next time. It's right on today, but last night, weeeelll...) Jeff |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: guinnesschik Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:25 PM *sigh* Sounds like I missed some serious fun. Waylon Fan....sometimes chiefs outnumber Indians. It's what makes a jam session a jam session as opposed to having a band. Just happens that way sometimes. I hope you do come back. I could stand to play fiddle on some Waylon songs, and do a little backing vocals...and I will sit in the corner and be a good little Indian. AND, we'll trade Waylon for "whaling.' Big Chief Guinnesschik |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:19 PM It was great to meet you, Jeff... And i disagree with the above post... I thought everything sounded great, and I had a great time Of course there will be times when two people start a bridge atthe same time, that's what happens in impromptu playing... I really dig your bodhran... I'd love to get one of those.. At any rate, I had a blast, and I hope you'll be back for the next session on Oct. 4th... -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,The new guy last night Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:12 PM Hey all.. I had an absolute blast last night (even if i was probably being one of the above mentioned "chiefs"... hope I wasn't being a session hog!!) That was one of the friendliest sessions that I've been to in ages. You made the new guy feel welcome...shy retiring flower that i am... thanks again, and I'll be there next time with Bells on.. or at least a bodhran! Jeff |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Waylon Fan Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:05 PM Well, last night was kinda frustrating. There were maybe 2 or 3 songs that I'd played before (mainly those that Branwen and I started out together - World Turned upside down, Spanish Ladies). But I had no problem following the guy across from me with the guitar and harmonica. It also seems like there are to many chiefs and not enough Indians. When it came time for a lead, everybody tried to play one - the harp guy, Mr. whistle, etc... Mr. whistle over there needs to get over himself. A little bit goes a long ways. After a while all those whistle tunes start to sound alike - kinda like blues harmonica. Anyways, the beer was good. Not sure if I will be back again. I did have a good time, even though the above doesn't give that impression. |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Date: 21 Sep 00 - 06:40 PM well, groovy is good... I'll take that But I've never been "oh-no-I-broke-a-nail!-girly" -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Mbo Date: 21 Sep 00 - 06:35 PM Yeah, but you're groovy! |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Date: 21 Sep 00 - 06:33 PM Funny, I've never thought of myself as being particularly "girly"... -Branwen- |

Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 21 Sep 00 - 03:55 PM Thanks Jed.
Fortunato, it is sexist. You'd think I could get as much attention as Branwen, since I'm the only one there in a skirt, but all the boys want to flirt with her. Mimosa |
Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Fortunato Date: 21 Sep 00 - 03:50 PM Now this girly-girl thing sounds a bit sexist friends, how about personally-person? Or am I have I committed gender bender? regards Fortunato |
