Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Letty Date: 09 Mar 07 - 01:38 PM I've cunningly used the parent connection to wiggle my way into Kiel this year, so Susanne: Please count me in, plus my mother and probably my father (if he can get time off). Woohoo! |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Fidjit Date: 08 Mar 07 - 02:22 PM Yes I've booked my ferry too. See you there. Also Friday to Monday. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Doug Chadwick Date: 08 Mar 07 - 02:08 PM Well, I've booked the ferry so I've got to take part now. I should arrive in Kiel in the late afternoon on Friday and will be staying 'til about lunchtime on the Monday. Looking forward to seeing everyone, DC |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Fidjit Date: 08 Mar 07 - 11:24 AM Friday: arrivals (anybody who would liek to arrive earlier, let me know. I'm not working in early May.) Dick Gaughan gig at Segeberg (30 mins from Kiel by car) I might arrive earlier. Depends on the ferry times. Dick Gaugan could of interest too. Haven't seen him live. What's the ticket price? Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Susanne (skw) Date: 07 Mar 07 - 03:09 PM Ernest, b&b is not that popular in Germany, but there's one round the corner, on the way to Hof Akkerboom. I could ask them for you. Also, the Kiel website includes a link to the local tourist office where you'll find more accommodation. I'll PM you with the details of that first b&b, but not before the weekend, I'm afraid. Wilfried, you're welcome to the Akkerboom appleyard, of course, but my balcony may be more comfortable. Don't worry, we'll work something out. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Ernest Date: 05 Mar 07 - 02:04 PM Can you please recommend a B&B, Susanne? Or what other accommodations are possible? Best Ernest |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: MudGuard Date: 05 Mar 07 - 04:16 AM Roll call? In Kiel that would probably be "BRÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖTCHEN!" ;-) If new thread, then "Eurogathering Kiel, May 4th-7th, 2007, Details" would be better than Wilfried's suggestion. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 05 Mar 07 - 04:09 AM Yes, start a new thread, call it (maybe) Eurogathering 2007, Details, please. And don't forget the address of Hof Akkerboom. Couldn't find it on the plan. For roll call: book me in for May, 4-7, same arrival and depart as Mudguard. If there is no corner or table for me to roll out my mattrass, 2 trees in hammock distance will do (but roof preferred). Eager to meet you Wilfried |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Susanne (skw) Date: 04 Mar 07 - 08:21 PM The plan is: - Friday: arrivals (anybody who would liek to arrive earlier, let me know. I'm not working in early May.) Dick Gaughan gig at Segeberg (30 mins from Kiel by car) - Saturday: Tour of the town for those who are interested, or crossing the firth by boat, having a meal and returning in time for Public ceilidh night with German and foreign musicians at Hof Akkerboom - Sunday: as on Sat, or lazing about Afternoon session at Hof Akkerboom - Monday: Stay on if you like, but as Germans have to be back at work (all but me) individual activities will be the order of the day I haven't arranged any meals or anything yet. Maybe we should start a new thread for the detailed planning. We could start it with another roll call, including mode of transport and accommodation. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: MudGuard Date: 04 Mar 07 - 04:43 AM In the UK, usually, the first Monday in May is the "May Bank holiday" (and afaik a/k/a "Labour day"). In Germany, it is not a holiday ("Labour Day" in Germany is always the first of May) |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering, Kiel, 4th-6th May From: Fidjit Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:20 PM Been out of Britain too long I think. I'm a bit confused about this Monday 7th. Is that a holiday day? If so what one is it? Don't think it's a holiday in Sweden. I see that Upton festival is on that week-end too with the Monday included. I haven't booked any ferries yet so it would help to know the dates we are doing what. Chas |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Fidjit Date: 21 Feb 07 - 09:54 AM Just to get you all ready for May read this. Subject: Language lesson. The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing public enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, public akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will encourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the language is disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th yer, people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords containing "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru. Und efter ze fifz yeer, v evil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 20 Feb 07 - 08:03 PM Hooray, Andy! Things have been quiet - how are you all doing for accommodation? For transport? Any other ideas to contribute? The venue has been pressing me for a more detailed description of our virtual gathering, so I'll have to get down to it next weekend. I'll let you know what I've come up with. |

Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 16 Jan 07 - 05:20 PM Kiel Week is not a navy meeting but mainly a sailing event. Nowadays, however, it has taken on the character of a fun fair with an awful lot awfully lound (and sometimes awful) music. Still, it's something not to be missed if you're a sailing enthusiast or just like having a good time. Unfortunately, it starts about a month after the Eurogathering. And beside the university, we have a technical college and an art college, 52 schools, two public art galleries and three museums that I can think of right now. And the countryside roundabout is beautiful. However, nothing beats the view of the water. Fidjit, what do you mean - you'll be on the Gothenburg ferry? You're supposed to be in Kiel! |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: GUEST,Fidjit Date: 16 Jan 07 - 06:16 AM Still with computer trouble. What do we know about Kiel? There are ferries to Oslo, Norway And Gothenburg, Sweden. The one I'll be on. And other places too I'm sure. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 15 Jan 07 - 03:15 AM The Kiel Canal was formerly called Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal. In this times the Infantry Regiment Nr 85 was stationed in Kiel. Since then all Army soldiers are called 85ers by the Navy (even today!). Every year ther is a great international navy meeting called the Kiel Week. Oh, and Kiel has a University. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 14 Jan 07 - 06:23 PM Chas, at least you know Kiel is on the Kiel Canal (locally called the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, or North Sea-Baltic-Canal)= water. It's also on the Baltic via Kiel Firth = more water. It has an attractive venue (though not exclusively folk) in Hof Akkerboom. And, most important of all: It has me as a citizen. What else do you need to know? :-)) If there is anything else you could try asking, or try the link I gave above: Kiel General question: Would anyone like a guided tour of the city? |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: GUEST,Fidjit Date: 14 Jan 07 - 06:54 AM Slight correction to last post. Before any other sailing freaks get on to me. The Dulcibella was of course a converted lifeboat. The Asgard (Åsgård, in Norwegian) A Colin Archer. Was a wedding present by his future father-in-law to Erskine and Molly Childers. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: GUEST,Fidjit Date: 14 Jan 07 - 05:54 AM What do we know about Kiel? Well in Erskine Childers, "Riddle if the Sands", the Dulcibella got a tow through the Kiel Canal by a tug. The Dulcebella (or rather the Aasgaard) is a Colin Archer boat built in Norway. Dulcebella/Aasgaard was used by Childers for gun running from Belgium to Howth. Childers was shot by firing squad on November 2nd.1922. The Dulcebella/Aasgaard is now in prison! Not really. The prison is in Dublin and has been turned into a museum. About Kiel? Not enough obviously. Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 13 Jan 07 - 10:12 PM Don't know exactly where yet, but I'm sure we'll find a space for your tent, Doug! If nowhere else, in Hof Akkerboom's appleyard, within staggering distance of our venue (as one folksinger of my acquaintance used to say). And a boat trip of some kind is a must around here. |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Jan 07 - 06:23 PM Susanne, Can I book the tent space please? I agree that the group should be kept together. A boat trip of any sort sounds fun, so you can count me in for whichever we choose. DC |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 11 Jan 07 - 05:29 PM As I said above, there is enough parking space round my house for all of you. There may even be room for Doug's tent somewhere. My offer of help was meant precisely to help you find places not too far away. As Kiel is a popular holiday destination (particularly for people who aren't confined to school holidays any more) the cheaper rooms may fill up quickly. Anyway, one space in my flat is reserved for Andy. Though he hasn't said so, I count him in as a certainty. Wilfried, if you agree to sleep on the floor, not spit on the same, and not molest the cat you're welcome. There'd be room (just) for a couple more, and if the weather is warm another two or three could sleep on the big balcony. Other than that, a good hotel and a b&b can be found on the way to the venue. No official campsites near, but we'll find a way if necessary. The backpackers' hostel is not too far away from the venue either, and I think there is a car park for mobile homes somewhere near. Something else: Some of you have indicated interest in the cruise with buffet lunch. I'd have to book that fairly soon as it is much in demand. However, it costs 35 Euros, and some others may think twice about that. I suggest we take the comparatively cheap boat trip across the firth and find a place to eat there that may suit everybody's purse. I wouldn't like the group to split up because of money. Any comments? |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: GUEST,Fidjit Date: 09 Jan 07 - 05:35 PM And somewhere to park the car so's I can sleep in it?? Free! Chas |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Doug Chadwick Date: 09 Jan 07 - 02:55 AM I'm not really bothered about what level of accommodation I have, so long as it's close to the action – preferably within walking distance. I have a tent but could make do with a corner of someone's floor. I don't mind paying for a B&B or hotel but I don't want to be stuck in remote luxury if everyone else is making music into the early hours. Susanne, could you please PM me some details of campsites and B&B's with some idea of their locations relative to the proposed music venues? DC |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 09 Jan 07 - 01:42 AM A place to roll out my mat and sleepingbag would be fine. Can't await it Wilfried |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 08 Jan 07 - 05:11 PM Happy new year to you all! Well, there hasn't exactly been a rush for info ... Does anyone need help with accommodation? I now have a list of hotels, b&b's, hostels and camping in the area. Post here or send me a PM or an eMail (skw at worldmusic dot de). |
Subject: RE: 2007 Eurogathering From: Susanne (skw) Date: 19 Dec 06 - 04:39 PM skarpi, glad to see you're back online! Or did you escape the communications cut after the broken undersea cable reported in our papers? Anyway, there is an IKEA store right round the corner from me - get them to send you there, and make it the right weekend. :-) As to cost, you'll have to find out the cost of flights yourself, I'm not very good at this. The only time I've flown was to Hull and back for the 2004 (?) Eurogathering, and I relied heavily on Wolfgang's superior knowledge. train or bus fares over here are not exactly cheap, but affordable, and maybe a lift can be organised for you. Accommodation can be anything from the floor of my house or a tent (free), a backpackers' hostel, the local youth hostel (reasonable) or b&b (affordable) to hotels of several categories. What do you think is most in your line? Send me a PM and I'll try and check it out for you over Christmas. I'll put the results on the Mudcat for everybody's use in good time. |
